"This is the candy your grandmother left for you; it's quite sweet. These are the pine nuts and walnuts I picked from the mountains in autumn. I chose the larger ones specifically for you.
These are the sweet potato chips I made myself; they’re both sweet and crispy.
And this is the steamed cake that your cousin brought me when he visited a few days ago. I couldn't bear to eat it, so I saved it all for you." Grandma Tang pulled out a pile of treats from the cupboard by the kang.
Little Moon had grown accustomed to good things since she was young and hardly paid any attention to the sweets Grandma Tang presented. However, her older sisters were wide-eyed at the sight of so many delicious snacks.
At home, they rarely got treats; even if they wanted a piece of dried sweet potato, they had to consider Grandma Tang's mood. Now, seeing such a bounty of goodies, their eyes sparkled with desire.
Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man felt more than just envy; there was a tinge of bitterness in their hearts as well. Wang Zhaodi was somewhat better off since her two grandsons were older, and she and her husband were willing to indulge them. But Zhang Man was different; she had three daughters and felt a bit inferior because of it.
Moreover, Grandma Tang and her husband did indeed show a preference for boys over girls. They weren't the type to scold or mistreat their granddaughters outright, but it was clear they favored their grandsons.
Initially, neither Grandma Tang nor Wang Zhaodi or Zhang Man thought much of this situation. Especially Zhang Man, who believed that Grandma Tang was much better than other mothers-in-law. She had seen how women in their village who didn’t bear sons lived their lives.
Comparing that to Grandma Tang, while she might look down on them occasionally, she never resorted to daily scolding. It was evident that she favored her eldest son’s children a bit more, which Zhang Man considered quite generous for a mother-in-law.
Despite often grumbling about Grandma Tang's favoritism behind her back, Zhang Man understood that if she were in another family’s shoes, she might have faced much worse treatment for not bearing sons. Therefore, she felt grateful toward Grandma Tang and accepted her bias as normal.
However, seeing how Grandma Tang treated Little Moon compared to her own three daughters made Zhang Man feel a pang of bitterness in her heart.
Although she understood that Old Lady Tang acted this way because Tang Zhicheng and the others lived far away and rarely returned, it still left Zhang Man feeling unbalanced. After all, Tang Zhicheng and Ye Fangfei were from the capital and earned salaries; provoking them would not benefit anyone in the family.
Feeling uneasy, Zhang Man couldn't help but voice her thoughts. "Big Sister, Second Sister, Third Sister, what are you all staring at? Go back inside!" she snapped. "Do you think you can enjoy these treats? You should consider whether you even deserve them."
Old Lady Tang had been happily stuffing candies into Little Moon's pocket, and everyone had been smiling at the scene. However, as soon as Zhang Man spoke, the previously relaxed atmosphere suddenly froze.
Tang Zhiwu was taken aback; he never expected his usually sharp-witted wife to say something so deflating at that moment. He quickly tugged at Zhang Man, fearing she might say something else that would provoke an outburst from his mother.
Old Lady Tang indeed felt the urge to scold her. She thought about how the third family had just returned and didn't want Ye Fangfei to overthink things. So she suppressed her anger and shot a fierce glare at Zhang Man, silently vowing to deal with her later.
