Tang Laohan noticed the atmosphere was a bit stiff, so he waved over to Daya and the others. "Daya, come over and eat with your sister."
Daya hesitated and glanced at Zhang Man, who remained silent. Seeing this, Tang Zhiwu quickly chimed in, "Daya, go ahead. Don’t you love eating pine nuts? Your grandmother is being generous today, so make sure to enjoy it."
Tang Zhiwu even cracked a joke to lighten the mood. "Yes, Daya, Erya, Sanya, come over! Your uncle brought some delicious treats for you."
"Da Bao, hand me that travel bag tied with a red string over there," Tang Zhi said, stepping in to help ease the tension.
Da Bao and Er Bao had already brought in Tang Zhi's belongings and were waiting in the main room. As soon as Tang Zhi spoke, Da Bao responded promptly and handed over the travel bag tied with a red string.
Tang Zhi took the bag, opened it, and began pulling out one delightful item after another. First, he took out some shrimp chips, opened the package, and handed a few to each of the children, including Da Bao and Er Bao.
"Here, have some candy! Try these sweets from the capital and see how they compare to ours."
He continued rummaging through the bag. "Mom, this is brown sugar; this is from Deshunzhai in the capital—snacks that Feifei bought for you."
He added, "These bottles of liquor are for Dad, and there are also a few pairs of nylon socks that Feifei got for you and Dad."
As Tang Zhi distributed the shrimp chips to the children, Grandma Tang's eyes sparkled with excitement. Watching him share sweets made her heart ache with joy. Now that he was pulling out so many wonderful items one by one, she couldn't help but cast a proud glance at Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man.
Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man were indeed envious of all the goodies but understood their place. No matter how much they craved these treats, their brother-in-law wouldn't share them with them.
However, they also realized that once these items reached Grandma's hands—though they might not get any themselves—they could find ways to benefit indirectly. Especially Wang Zhaodi; she had given birth to two grandsons for the Tang family. Even if she couldn't enjoy these treats herself, her sons would surely get their share.
Zhang Man didn't have sons but was clever with her words. Whenever Tang Zhi and his family visited, she always managed to charm Grandma Tang into giving her a little something.
The two of them agreed that with so many good things brought back for Old Lady Tang, Tang Zhi and Ye Fangfei's attitudes had improved significantly. As for Old Lady Tang's favoritism earlier, well, that was nothing new; they had grown accustomed to it over time. Besides, it had only been a while since Tang Zhi and the others returned home, so a little favoritism was to be expected.
With this thought in mind, Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man decided to say something to Ye Fangfei to express their gratitude.
Wang Zhaodi said, "Sister-in-law, you really are generous to buy such fine wine and snacks for our parents."
Zhang Man added, "That's right! Sister-in-law, you are truly filial. Our family has really benefited from your kindness."
"If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have had the chance to taste these delicacies from the capital."
She glanced at her three daughters, who looked as if they had never tasted anything good in their lives, and couldn't help but add with a hint of bitterness, "Our eldest niece is truly fortunate to have been born to you. Unlike my three girls, who have to deal with a mother like me."
Ye Fangfei smiled at Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man but remained silent. She hadn't expected such a scene to unfold on her first day back. Fortunately, Old Man Tang stepped in just in time, and Old Lady Tang quickly followed suit to smooth things over. Otherwise, Ye Fangfei might have lost her temper.
