"By the way, Mom and Dad, this is the meat I brought back." Tang Zhicheng pulled out a nylon bag filled with meat.
"My goodness, Third Brother, where did you get so much meat?" Tang Zhiwu exclaimed in surprise upon seeing the large quantity.
Tang Zhi was equally astonished. "This bag must weigh dozens of pounds! You carried all this back?"
If anyone remained calm, it was the old man Tang. After all, experience speaks volumes.
Old Man Tang examined the color of the meat closely and asked Tang Zhicheng, "This isn't pork, is it?"
"Yes, it's beef. How did you tell?" Tang Zhicheng replied.
The family's eyes turned to Old Man Tang.
"The color of this meat is different from pork, and the grain is coarser," Old Man Tang explained.
Upon hearing this, Tang Zhi and the others took a closer look and realized he was right. The beef was indeed redder than pork and had a coarser texture.
"Dad, you're amazing! How did you figure that out?" Tang Zhi scratched his head in admiration.
The others nodded in agreement.
Old Man Tang said with a hint of pride, "Hmph, of course I can tell. Back in the day when our production team had to slaughter a cow, I helped the butcher."
At that moment, everyone felt compelled to hear Old Man Tang's story. However, as they gazed at the meat, their thoughts were consumed with how to prepare such a bounty rather than listening to him boast.
Tang Zhicheng took out the top layer of meat and explained, "This is beef; I got some beef ribs. We'll stew it with some radishes and potatoes."
"This is lamb; we’ll make lamb dumplings for New Year's Eve."
"And underneath is lamb offal. Mom, you can clean that up and make lamb soup."
"On a cold winter morning, there's nothing better than a warm bowl of lamb soup," he continued. "Make sure to drink plenty; don’t hold back and save some for the little ones."
Hearing her son's words filled Old Lady Tang with warmth.
Look at that—her eldest son had carried all this meat from so far away in Beijing just for her. He even reminded her to eat more!
"How can it compare to these two fools at home? I save every penny for whom? It's all for them. Yet, not only do they not appreciate it, but they also worry that I favor the third one. They don't even consider that if I were to show favoritism, it would be towards them.
After all these years, if it weren't for the third one sending money home, how could our family live so well? Grandma Tang felt a surge of emotion; it seemed she needed to treat the third one and his family better in the future. Especially his wife—this third son is good in every way, except for one thing: he fears his wife.
Grandma Tang was worried about offending Ye Fangfei. What if Ye Fangfei stopped the third son from honoring her and the old man?
With this thought in mind, Grandma Tang smiled and asked Ye Fangfei, "Do you like beef dumplings? Tonight, I'll cut a piece of meat and make dumplings just for you."
Ye Fangfei was taken aback by Grandma Tang's sudden warmth. However, she didn't want to be treated specially. There were so many people in the family; how could it be right to make dumplings just for a few of them?
"No need, I'll eat whatever everyone else is having. There's no need to go through all that trouble," Ye Fangfei replied.
"It's no trouble at all! Just tell me what you want to eat, and I'll make it for you," Grandma Tang insisted.
"Alright, I will," Ye Fangfei said.
Grandma Tang felt pleased with herself, thinking she had strengthened her bond with her daughter-in-law. Then she turned to Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man, saying, "You two take the meat to the kitchen; I'll go cut it into smaller pieces."
