Knowing that she had offended Ye Fangfei earlier, Zhang Man realized that the only way to make amends was to apologize.
She looked at Ye Fangfei and awkwardly said, "Sister-in-law, I was blinded by my own foolishness this morning when I said those things. Please don’t hold it against me."
Ye Fangfei was surprised that Zhang Man had come to apologize, but she hadn’t taken the matter to heart; after all, she hadn’t suffered any loss and had retorted at the time. Moreover, Zhang Man had only made a few sarcastic remarks without crossing any serious lines. They were sisters-in-law and would have to interact in the future; if she continued to dwell on it, it would only make her seem petty.
So Ye Fangfei waved her hand and replied, "Oh, what are you talking about, Sister-in-law? It’s all in the past now. There’s really no need for you to come all this way just to apologize."
Seeing Ye Fangfei respond this way, Zhang Man felt relieved. "I’m glad you’re not upset with me. I was just envious of you and spoke out of turn."
"But honestly, Sister-in-law, you look great in that outfit."
"You know, I’m not much older than you. If we stood together, people might believe we’re from two different generations."
Zhang Man had a way with words, and her compliment brought a smile to Ye Fangfei’s face.
"You're exaggerating, Sister-in-law! You’re still very young," Ye Fangfei replied.
"It’s not an exaggeration at all! You haven’t aged a bit in these past few years; you look just like you did seven years ago," Zhang Man said with a smile.
Ye Fangfei chuckled and asked, "How have you been these past few years? Is everything okay at home?"
"Oh, life is just as it is—neither too good nor too bad. We don’t eat well but we won’t starve either. Life in the countryside is like that; it’s predictable," Zhang Man replied.
"It’s not much different in the city either. We have to work every day; it’s not easy making money," Ye Fangfei countered.
"True, it’s tough everywhere," Zhang Man thought about Ye Fangfei's words but chose not to argue. After all, she had just offended her earlier and should go along with her now.
Ye Fangfei smiled but didn’t say anything further. She sensed the insincerity in their conversation; their living environments were so different that there wasn’t much they could discuss. However, Zhang Man clearly wanted to bond with Ye Fangfei and realized that talking about other topics wouldn’t connect them either.
Turning to talk about Tang Zhi's elder sister, Tang Zhi Jing.
"Third sister-in-law, you know that aunt of ours, right? The one we call 'aunt' since she got married? I heard she had another girl last year, and now she's pregnant again," Zhang Man said.
"Really? She's pregnant again? I didn't know that. Didn't she just have a baby a few months ago?" Ye Fangfei replied, recalling that Tang Zhi Jing had a child.
"I even wrote to them back then, but she didn't respond," Ye Fangfei added.
"When her little moon was born, Tang Zhi Jing, as the aunt, didn’t show any sign of acknowledgment. Now that she has a child, she specially writes to us. I wonder what she's thinking. Does she really believe I would overlook past grievances and send her gifts?"
"Everything in life is about reciprocity; it doesn't make sense to expect returns without giving anything in return."
"Yes, their third girl is only four months old, and I heard she’s already over a month pregnant again."
"What I want to tell you isn't about that. I overheard it, so don’t say it was me who told you," Zhang Man whispered.
Seeing Zhang Man's mysterious demeanor piqued Ye Fangfei's interest. "What is it? Tell me, I promise I won’t say it was you."
