“Father, Mother, we’re back! Didn’t the third brother and the others return? Where are they?”
Tang Zhijing and her three daughters had come back together. She placed the little one, Xiao Sanni, on the kang and looked up to see her mother holding a little boy who was drinking milk from a bottle.
“Mother, is this my nephew? He’s really chubby!” Tang Zhijing reached out to hold the little boy, who quickly dodged away since he wasn’t familiar with her.
Old Lady Tang adjusted her grandson’s position in her arms and asked, “Why did you come back today?”
Typically, married daughters return to their parents’ home on the first day of the Lunar New Year, but today was the day before, the nineteenth day of the twelfth month.
Tang Zhijing glanced at her two daughters. “You two go find Da Yaya to play. I need to talk to your grandmother about something.”
Upon hearing their mother’s words, Da Nini turned to leave but was stopped by Old Lady Tang. “Don’t go! Da Ya and the others aren’t home; they took Xiao Yueying out to play.”
“Why didn’t they dress them warmly before going out? It’s so cold outside! What if the children catch a cold?” Old Lady Tang grumbled, urging them to get on the kang to warm up. “Da Nini, you two hurry up and get on the kang; it’s warm there.”
As she spoke, she took out some large shrimp pastries that Tang Zhicheng had brought back and gave each girl a piece. “This is from your uncle. You two hurry up and eat!”
Old Lady Tang felt sorry for her two granddaughters. In their family, boys were favored over girls, and Tang Zhijing’s in-laws couldn’t provide much either. The two children had a hard life at home.
So every time Tang Zhijing brought them over, Old Lady Tang would prepare some food for them. However, she always did it secretly from Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man. After all, the Tang family wasn’t wealthy; even their own children didn’t have much to eat.
If Wang Zhaodi and Zhang Man found out that she was giving food meant for the family to her granddaughters, they would surely be unhappy. To avoid conflict, Old Lady Tang would discreetly slip treats to the two girls so they could eat quickly.
Today was no different; she gave them each two pieces of candy and urged them to eat fast. After all, Da Ya and the others had taken Xiao Yueying out to play, and who knew when they would be back?
Dani had grown accustomed to visiting her grandmother's house, where her grandmother would secretly slip them some treats. However, whether it was candy or the shrimp crisps that their uncle had brought back from the capital, the two children held them in their hands with a bit of caution.
"Grandma, is this really for us?" Dani asked incredulously.
Nini looked at Grandma Tang with eager eyes.
"It is for you, but you must eat it quietly and not tell anyone," Grandma Tang reiterated.
The two children were no longer little; Dani was ten this year, and Nini was eight. They understood what Grandma meant.
"I know, Grandma," Dani replied.
"Me too," Nini echoed.
Tang Zhijing watched her daughters with envy as they held the candy. At her age, she had never tasted these so-called shrimp crisps before. She wanted to try one too and tentatively asked, "Mom, what do these shrimp crisps taste like? Can I have one to try?"
