Madam Tang shot her a glare, hissing, "Go away! You're an adult now, why are you so greedy?"
"I haven't even touched this candy; I'm saving it for the New Year to entertain guests."
Since she couldn't get any candy from her mother, Tang Zhijing turned her attention to her two daughters. Although the eldest daughter hesitated, she still took out a piece of candy and handed it over. "Mom, here, have some."
Just as Tang Zhijing reached out to take it, Madam Tang slapped her hand away. "What about your dignity? That’s for the child! How can you snatch food from your daughter?" Madam Tang scolded.
Then she turned to the eldest daughter and said, "Eldest, you eat it yourself; don’t give it to your mother."
The eldest daughter timidly glanced at Tang Zhijing and softly said, "Grandma, I can skip it. My mom is having a little brother; I’ll save it for him."
Tang Zhijing also puffed out her belly and said to Madam Tang, "Mom, I’m pregnant too! Why can’t I have a piece of candy?"
With that, she snatched the candy from her daughter's hand, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth.
"This is definitely capital city candy; it’s delicious," she said while eating.
Seeing how much her mother enjoyed the candy, the eldest daughter wanted to offer her the remaining piece. However, her younger sister tugged at her sleeve and whispered, "Sister, you eat it yourself."
After saying that, she unwrapped her own piece of candy and started munching on it.
The eldest daughter noticed that her sister had already eaten two pieces and felt tempted to taste some herself. After a moment of hesitation, she unwrapped the candy and popped it into her mouth.
As soon as the candy hit her tongue, she closed her eyes in bliss. Instead of chewing right away, she let it melt slowly in her mouth.
Once Tang Zhijing finished her piece of candy, she still craved more and wanted to take the other piece from her eldest daughter. Turning around, she saw that the girl had already eaten it. In a fit of frustration, she slapped the eldest daughter on the arm and scolded, "You greedy little thing! How could you not think of your brother when there’s something good to eat?"
The eldest daughter was taken aback by the slap, tears welling up in her eyes. She wanted to cry but held back out of fear.
Madam Tang watched as Tang Zhijing hit her child over a piece of candy and felt furious inside. If it weren't for Tang Zhijing being pregnant, she would have wanted to give her a good beating instead.
Tang Zhijing felt quite wronged. After all, she was pregnant and just wanted to eat something nice.
"Mother, it's not that I want candy; it's the baby in my belly that wants it," she said with a pout.
Old Lady Tang knew that her daughter was being unreasonable, and she didn't want to waste her breath arguing.
"Alright then, what are you really here for? It's the New Year, and everyone is busy at home. Why aren't you helping out at your in-laws' place? Why did you come back?"
Only then did Tang Zhijing remember her purpose for returning.
"Mother, did you tell Third Brother about what I mentioned last time?" she leaned closer to Old Lady Tang and asked.
"What are you talking about?" Old Lady Tang had completely forgotten what they had discussed.
Seeing her mother’s blank expression, Tang Zhijing realized that her mother hadn’t taken her words to heart at all. She felt a bit displeased but reminded herself that she needed her mother’s help for the baby.
Suppressing her frustration, she said, "Mother, didn’t I tell you? I want Third Brother to take my daughter back to raise."
Old Lady Tang hadn’t expected her to still be thinking about this matter. She had already said it wasn’t possible back then.
