Tang Zhicheng saw his wife trembling with anger and quickly explained, "Dear, please don't be upset. I'm not trying to stop you; I'm just worried you might get hurt."
Tang Zhijing was used to farm work, and no one could overpower her in a fight. After hearing her husband's explanation, Ye Fangfei's anger subsided a little. However, she wasn't ready to let him off the hook just yet. Staring at Tang Zhicheng, she said, "I had no intention of fighting her, but with her acting like this, there's no way I can continue associating with her."
Ye Fangfei took the opportunity to voice her decision. Tang Zhicheng was not surprised at all; he didn't oppose her but nodded in agreement. "Dear, I trust your judgment. We won't have any dealings with her from now on."
In the room, Tang Laotai and her daughter were both taken aback by Tang Zhicheng's words. Especially Tang Zhijing, who hadn't expected that a few casual complaints to her mother would be overheard by the third brother and his wife.
Tang Zhijing felt a pang of regret; now it wasn't just about losing an advantage—she was sure the third brother's wife would hold a grudge against her. Tang Laotai also regretted not stopping her daughter when she first mentioned it. Now, the third brother's wife already had grievances against their family, and hearing them gossiping behind her back would only fuel her resentment.
Earlier, when Tang Zhicheng had tried to stop Ye Fangfei, Tang Laotai had held onto a glimmer of hope that her son could persuade his wife. But now, his words had plunged their hearts into despair.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Tang Zhijing clutched her mother's hand tightly and asked anxiously, "Mother, what should we do?"
Tang Laotai shook off her hand in frustration. "How should I know? It's all your fault for speaking without thinking."
Tang Laotai was also annoyed with herself for not stopping her daughter earlier. Now their private conversation had been overheard by the third brother's wife, and the previously thawed relations were likely to freeze up again.
Just as they were at a loss for what to do, Tang Zhicheng entered with Ye Fangfei in tow.
"Tang Zhijing, why are you so idle? Always stirring up trouble with your maternal family! Let me tell you something: don’t get any ideas about me; I have my own children and won’t be raising any daughters for you."
Tang Zhicheng was angry, and his tone reflected that. He then turned his ire towards Tang Laotai: "Mother, do you want our family to be in constant discord? Why do you keep listening to your daughter's nonsense?"
Seeing that her son was genuinely furious, Tang Laotai hurriedly explained, "Third Brother, I didn't hear what your sister said."
Tang Zhijing was also afraid that Tang Zhicheng might really cut ties with her and quickly added, "Third Brother, it wasn't intentional; I just mentioned it casually."
"You don't have to say anything, and I don't want to listen. That's it; from now on, you are you, and I am me. Let's not get involved with each other anymore," Tang Zhicheng said.
"Third Brother, she is your eldest sister. How can you say such a thing?" Old Madam Tang exclaimed.
Old Madam Tang only had one daughter, Tang Zhijing. Although she knew that this time it was Tang Zhijing's fault, she didn't want her son and daughter to reach a point of never reconciling.
Hearing Tang Zhicheng's words, Tang Zhijing became frightened and started to cry. While crying, she said, "Third Brother, you can't treat me like this. I am your own sister. How can you sever ties with me over an outsider?"
"Did I say anything wrong? Ever since you got married, you've been distant from the family. You haven't even visited in years."
"Even if I said a few things about your wife, so what? I am her elder sister-in-law, and our mother is her mother-in-law. What’s wrong with saying a few words? Which daughter-in-law hasn’t been scolded by her mother-in-law? Some even get beaten; it's just part of life. So what if we say a few things about her?"
