My third brother said that if there’s a chance in the future, he will help my daughter find a job and introduce her to someone in the city. What’s the use of having sons? They still have to work like oxen for their families. I won’t say anything more; I could still enjoy life in the city with my daughter.
Tang Zhijing could hardly stand the cold mockery and boastful remarks from her sisters-in-law. To her surprise, her bragging only invited another wave of ridicule from them.
“Oh, so you’re going to find your daughter a match in the city? You should really consider whether she’s even suitable for that.”
“Do you really think city folks would look at us country bumpkins?”
“Right? And finding a job—do you think it’s as easy as picking vegetables off the street?”
“And enjoying life with your daughter? Do you really think you have that kind of luck?”
“Hmph! You keep bragging about how great your brother is to you, but I’ve never seen him come visit even once!”
“You had three daughters, yet I’ve never seen him send anything for his niece.”
“I think you’re just full of hot air, trying to fool us.”
“You keep talking about your third brother, but why doesn’t he do something practical?”
The sisters-in-law bombarded her with their comments, and in a moment of frustration, Tang Zhijing blurted out, “My third brother is good to me! He told me that when he comes back for the New Year, he’ll take my daughter back with him and help raise her.”
“My brother lives in the capital! Both he and his wife have jobs; they’re both working professionals. My daughter will have a good life ahead.”
At first, Tang Zhijing was indeed just speaking off the cuff. However, as she continued, she began to feel that this idea had some merit. Her brother and his wife were both workers; her brother was a truck driver who earned well. His wife worked at a large warehouse, which was also respectable work.
They earned plenty and only had two children; taking care of one more wouldn’t be a burden at all. Once her daughter grew up and married a man from the city, she might actually be able to enjoy life there herself.
The more Tang Zhijing thought about it, the better it seemed—almost as if she had already moved to the city with her daughter.
She could no longer bother with bickering with her sisters-in-law. After saying a few words to her mother-in-law, she rushed back to her family home to discuss the matter with Old Lady Tang.
Although her sisters-in-law claimed she was boasting, they were somewhat affected by her words. Their attitude towards her had improved quite a bit. Especially now that she was pregnant again, they were more considerate. For the past few months, San Ni had been without milk, and they couldn't afford to buy formula. Every day, they had to prepare rice porridge for her.
Originally, there were complaints about a young girl needing to eat fine grains, whether from her mother-in-law or her sisters-in-law. However, the little girl was too small to eat the same food as them; she simply couldn't swallow it. There was no other choice; they couldn't just watch her starve to death. So they took the little rice they had at home and ground it into rice flour.
There wasn't much rice flour, and San Ni couldn't eat freely; she could only have one meal a day. The rest of the time, she would drink vegetable soup or have some cornmeal porridge to make do.
Now that San Ni was going to live in the city with her uncle, they didn't complain about using up their only bit of rice. After all, if San Ni really became a city dweller, they might need to rely on her in the future.
Though this thought was somewhat pragmatic, it was simply how things were. Tang Zhijing was unaware of her family's thoughts; she only knew that since she mentioned this matter, her treatment at home had improved significantly.
Finally standing tall in her household, Tang Zhijing had never considered that Tang Zhicheng might refuse this arrangement. What should she do now? Tang Zhicheng was against letting San Ni go with him.
At this moment, Tang Zhijing truly panicked. Everyone at home knew that San Ni was supposed to follow her third brother to Beijing after the New Year.
