The family arrived safely at Beijing Railway Station three days later, without exchanging a word during the journey.
At the exit, Ye Jianguo and Ye Zijun stood in the station square, each with a bicycle, waiting.
"Are they coming today? Why haven't they come out yet?" Ye Zijun said, stamping his feet in impatience.
"Yes, they said they would return today," Ye Jianguo replied.
"Let's wait a little longer. If they don't come out soon, we should head back," he added, rubbing his hands together to keep warm.
Knowing that Ye Fangfei and the others were returning from their hometown in the past two days, Ye Jianguo and Ye Zijun had ridden their bicycles to the station to wait. They had spent all day yesterday waiting without success, so they had come back again today.
"Alright, I think most of the people have come out by now. If they're on this train, they should be out soon," Ye Zijun said as he bounced on his feet while looking towards the station.
Just then, he spotted Ye Fangfei and the others coming out. "They’re here! Dad, look! Isn’t that Fangfei and the others?"
Ye Jianguo looked over and indeed saw them. He waved excitedly at Ye Fangfei. "Daughter! We're over here!"
Tang Zhicheng was discussing with Ye Fangfei about finding a cart to take home when he heard what sounded like Ye Jianguo's voice from outside.
"Doesn’t that sound like my dad?" Ye Fangfei wondered aloud as she looked up in confusion.
In the distance, she saw Ye Jianguo waving vigorously at them.
"It’s Dad and Big Brother! Let’s hurry over!" Tang Zhicheng exclaimed upon noticing them as well.
"Dad! Big Brother! What are you doing here?" Ye Fangfei asked as they approached.
"Grandpa! Uncle!" Little Moon chimed in happily.
"Hey, is Little Moon cold?" Ye Jianguo asked as he picked her up and bounced her gently in his arms.
"I'm not cold! Grandpa, I missed you!" Little Moon said, wrapping her arms around Ye Jianguo's neck affectionately.
"Oh really? Grandpa missed you too! When we get home, Grandpa has some treats saved just for you," Ye Jianguo replied with a beaming smile.
"Grandpa, I brought back good things for you and Grandma too!" Little Moon announced proudly.
"Oh? Our Little Moon is so thoughtful! She even remembers us!" Ye Jianguo said with delight as the two of them chatted away, oblivious to everyone else around them.
Ye Zijun placed their luggage on the back seat of the bicycle. He shook it back and forth to ensure that it wouldn’t fall off the rear rack.
"Alright, let’s go," Ye Zijun said.
"Let’s go home. Little Moon, hurry down; don’t let your grandpa hold you too long," Ye Fangfei replied.
Tang Zhicheng set his luggage on the bicycle and took Little Sun from Ye Fangfei’s arms.
Ye Jianguo also set Little Moon down on the ground. He wished he could hold his granddaughter forever, but he was getting older, and Little Moon was growing too; he simply couldn’t carry her anymore. He could only place Little Moon on his bicycle and pushed it along.
"Dad, Big Brother, how did you know we were coming back today?" Tang Zhicheng asked.
"Weren't you saying before the New Year that you'd be back in a couple of days? Mom asked me and Dad to come wait for you yesterday," Ye Zijun said with a smile.
Tang Zhicheng felt touched knowing that his father-in-law and brother-in-law had waited for them all day yesterday and were here again today.
"Oh, it’s so cold outside; we could have managed on our own. You didn’t have to come pick us up," Tang Zhicheng said, though his expression betrayed him.
"It’s no trouble at all. Let’s hurry back; it’s too cold. Is Mom warming up the kang for you at your place?" Ye Zijun replied.
"Let’s go home." Little Moon was settled in her seat, and Ye Jianguo echoed his agreement.
They had ridden their bicycles here, but on the way back, they couldn’t ride; they could only walk while pushing their bicycles.
The house wasn’t close to the train station, and it took them half an hour to get home.
