Tang Zhicheng wondered how she knew, but she couldn't answer him. However, it was clear that Tang Zhicheng wasn't thinking too much about it; he was preoccupied with thoughts of what he would do if the country allowed business activities.
"If business is allowed in the future, I will most likely get into it," he mused. "But I still need to think about what exactly to do. Over the years, every time I drove out, I brought back local specialties to sell, and that actually made quite a bit of money. But there's no rush; I should focus on driving and saving money first. Whatever business I decide to pursue later will ultimately depend on having capital," Tang Zhicheng said.
Ye Fangfei agreed with his line of thought. "You're right; it's too early to discuss these things now. Saving money is indeed the priority," she replied.
"Since you’ve decided to go to university, just focus on your studies. I'll take care of more household chores from now on. You can concentrate on learning," Tang Zhicheng encouraged her.
With both of them in agreement, Ye Fangfei dedicated herself to her studies. On days when Tang Zhicheng didn't drive, he took on the responsibilities of washing clothes, cooking, and picking up the kids.
Having graduated from university herself, Ye Fangfei felt confident about her chances of getting into college again. Although she had only been a junior clerk, passing the entrance exam was no small feat; it required overcoming many challenges. For her, it was just a matter of which university she would attend.
As the days passed and autumn turned into winter, October arrived quickly. Ye Fangfei knew that the college entrance exams would resume in October, but she couldn't recall the exact date. She kept an ear out for news and finally heard an announcement on October 21st.
"All eligible workers, farmers, and educated youth from rural areas are invited to voluntarily register for the college entrance examination." The news sent waves of excitement through the streets as people buzzed with anticipation.
Even Ye Fangfei felt a surge of emotion; she had been waiting for this day for a long time. The exam dates were set for December 23rd and 24th.
With the exam dates confirmed, Ye Fangfei became even more focused on her studies in the days leading up to it. When the exam day finally arrived, Tang Zhicheng woke up early to prepare breakfast for her—he bought fried dough sticks and soy milk and even boiled eggs arranged in the shape of the number one hundred.
"Hurry up and eat! Once you're done, I'll take you to your exam," Tang Zhicheng urged.
"Oh? You've arranged it like a hundred! Are you hoping I'll score a hundred on my exam?" Ye Fangfei laughed as she looked at the plate.
"Well, don't feel too pressured, just do your best on the exam," Tang Zhicheng said. "If you don't pass, it's okay; you can just go back to work afterward."
"Don't worry, I've been reviewing for so long. I'm confident I can get into college," Ye Fangfei replied.
"That's great! You go ahead and eat; I'll wake the kids up," Tang Zhicheng said before heading to another room.
After finishing their meal, the family set out together, first dropping the two children off at school. Then, Tang Zhicheng took Ye Fangfei to her exam venue.
"Dear, you go on in; I'll wait for you here," Tang Zhicheng said as he handed her the backpack.
"You go ahead; there's no need to wait for me. It's pretty cold outside," Ye Fangfei responded as she took the backpack.
"It's fine; you go in. I'm not afraid of the cold," Tang Zhicheng urged.
"Alright then, take care of yourself. I'm going in now." Seeing that he wouldn't listen to her, Ye Fangfei turned and walked into the school.
