Two days of exams passed in the blink of an eye. As Ye Fangfei emerged from the examination hall, she let out a long sigh of relief.
Tang Zhicheng spotted her and hurried over. "Wife, are you done? Let's go home." He turned his bicycle around and let her hop on.
Once they arrived home, Tang Zhicheng urged Ye Fangfei to rest on the kang while he went to pick up the children and prepare dinner. "You must be tired, right? Go lie down for a bit. I'll get the kids and make you some dumplings for dinner," he said.
"I'll take a short nap. Wake me when you get back," Ye Fangfei replied, feeling exhausted. She obediently climbed onto the kang, grabbed a pillow, and lay down.
Watching her close her eyes, Tang Zhicheng stepped outside to fetch a piece of meat from the large vat in the backyard to prepare for chopping into filling later. He also scooped two bowls of flour and mixed them with warm water to wake up the dough.
Once everything was prepared and he felt it was time, Tang Zhicheng set off to pick up the children.
"Keep your voices down! Your mother is tired and needs to rest; don’t wake her up," he reminded them as he spotted Ye Fangfei still sleeping through the window.
"Got it, Dad! Are you cooking?" Little Moon followed Tang Zhicheng into the kitchen as he entered.
"Yes, today I’m making dumplings to celebrate your mom finishing her exams," he replied while grabbing some vegetables to chop for the filling.
"Oh, I love dumplings!" Little Sun exclaimed, clapping his hands in excitement as he joined them in the kitchen.
"Shh! Keep it down so you don’t wake Mom," Little Moon instructed her brother. "You can find a picture book to read while I help Dad make dumplings." At ten years old, she was already quite responsible.
Little Sun listened to his sister; when she told him not to disturb their mother, he complied. When she suggested reading a picture book, he quickly ran off to grab one and settled on a small stool in the kitchen.
Seeing her brother behaving well, Little Moon decided not to fuss over him anymore. Instead, she turned to Tang Zhicheng and said, "Dad, I’ll help you make dumplings."
"No need for that; I can handle it myself. You focus on your homework," Tang Zhicheng replied as he finished chopping the filling and started mixing it together.
"I already finished my homework at school," Little Moon said proudly. She was diligent and usually completed her assignments there.
"Alright then, you can help me roll out the dough," Tang Zhicheng agreed.
As they worked together—one rolling out dough and the other filling dumplings—they found their rhythm quite well.
"We’re done! I’ll boil these now. You go wake your mom up for dinner," Tang Zhicheng announced after wrapping up the last dumpling.
"This dumpling is delicious! I didn’t expect you had such a knack for seasoning," Ye Fangfei praised after taking a bite of one.
Tang Zhicheng felt a sweet satisfaction in his heart as he watched his daughter-in-law enjoy her food. "You like it? I'll make it for you again in the future," he said.
"Little Sun, slow down; you're getting food all over your face," Ye Fangfei said, turning her attention back to the little one.
The family had a lively dinner, and as usual, Tang Zhicheng took on the task of washing the dishes. While he washed up, Ye Fangfei helped the two children with their evening routines and settled them down for bed. Each of them had their roles, and they worked together in an orderly fashion.
After taking care of the kids, Tang Zhicheng finished tidying up the kitchen. By the time they both lay down on the bed, it was only around seven-thirty in the evening.
"How did your exam go? Which university are you planning to apply to?" Tang Zhicheng asked as he held Ye Fangfei close under the covers.
"It went well; I think getting into university won't be a problem," she replied. "But I'm not considering Huqing or Jingbei anymore. I'm planning to apply to the University of International Business and Economics, and I have some knowledge about accounting there too."
Ye Fangfei was self-aware; although she had known for a while that college entrance exams were being reinstated, she didn't consider herself particularly clever. After all, she had only managed to get into a second-tier university back in modern times. There was no reason to believe that coming back in time would suddenly make her smarter.
She often wondered if those characters in time-travel novels who easily aced exams at Huqing or Jingbei had somehow become smarter just by traveling through time. But that wasn’t her case; she was just an ordinary person.
"The University of Jing City, right?" Tang Zhicheng said. He didn't mind which university his wife attended as long as it was in Jing City.
"Of course it's Jing City! If I had to study somewhere far away, I wouldn't want to leave you all behind," Ye Fangfei replied.
Knowing that his wife planned to apply to a university in Jing City put Tang Zhicheng's mind at ease, and he fell asleep peacefully.
While working at her job, Ye Fangfei calculated her scores and filled out her application forms. Now all she could do was wait for her scores to come out and then for the acceptance letter.
The acceptance letter arrived one Sunday when Ye Fangfei and Tang Zhicheng were busy cleaning their home.
"Is Ye Fangfei here? The acceptance letter has arrived!" the postal worker called out loudly at their door.
"Hey, I'm here!" Ye Fangfei, who was wiping the glass, responded quickly to the call. She hurriedly jumped down from the windowsill.
