Gu Changqing pondered for a moment and felt that his daughter had a point. The border had indeed been unstable these past two years, and Emperor Jing had privately approached him, suggesting that he return to the border once again. He could not wait for an imperial decree before finding a way out for his daughter; by then, it would be too late.
Gu Qingning wished she could be reborn to the year when her mother was still alive, so she would have enough time to make arrangements. Yet, fate had given her a chance to start over but had not allowed her to choose the time.
She needed to think carefully about finding a safe place for her younger sister.
After Gu Changqing and Gu Waning left, Gu Qingning stared out the window again, lost in thought. Bai Zhi and Lu Yan dared not make a sound, worried about their mistress's health. They contemplated going to the small kitchen to prepare some of her favorite jujube pastries.
"Miss, you mustn't catch a chill," Lu Yan said as she placed the jujube pastries on the table and hurried over to close the window. After shutting it, she turned back to exchange a glance with Bai Zhi, both filled with concern; their mistress was lost in her thoughts again.
Since Gu Qingning's fever had subsided, this had happened multiple times.
They quietly withdrew, accustomed to the situation.
The next morning, Gu Yanran sent a maid to inform her that Gu Yuxuan's asthma had improved and hoped she would join them at Foguang Temple to pray for her brother.
Listening to the message, Gu Qingning raised an eyebrow, revealing a smile that was neither fully genuine nor completely mocking. As expected, Gu Yanran was just like in her previous life—trying to showcase their sibling bond by inviting her to pray for Gu Yuxuan on their mother's death anniversary.
Gu Ruofeng knew today marked Shimin's death anniversary but did so intentionally. Why should that wretched woman have such good fortune? Even in death, she had two daughters to honor her memory?
Thinking this made her feel resentful and angry.
When her daughter Gu Yanran suggested they go together to pay respects, it nearly pushed Gu Ruofeng over the edge as she almost leapt up to scold Gu Yanran for being ungrateful.
"Mother, please calm down," Gu Yanran said helplessly as she guided the agitated Gu Ruofeng back into a chair. "I’m going there to pray for Xuan'er. Don’t you want your brother to recover quickly?"
"Xuan'er is my heart and soul; of course I want him to get better soon." Gu Ruofeng sighed lightly, frustration bubbling up inside her. "I have no objection to you praying for Xuan'er. But why must it be on that wretched woman's death anniversary? Isn’t that just adding insult to injury?"
"Mother, listen to me," Gu Yanran said calmly as she held down Gu Ruofeng’s hand. A glint of calculation flashed in her eyes as an uncontainable smile crept onto her lips. "Think about it: since it's Gu Qingning's dead mother’s anniversary, if I pray for my brother there, wouldn’t I be able to seize their good fortune?"
Leaning closer to Gu Ruofeng’s ear, Gu Yanran whispered softly: "I’ve already planned everything; I will definitely help you and my brother get that breath of relief."
Hearing her daughter's words made Gu Ruofeng feel somewhat better. During this time when Xuan'er was ill, she wanted nothing more than to find a way to retaliate against Gu Qingning. Who would have thought that Chun'er—the useless girl—would die without dragging Gu Qingning down with her? Instead, they only punished ten of her maidservants as a result. Furious, she ordered Chun'er's body thrown into a mass grave.
Truly worthy of being my well-raised daughter! A smile appeared at the corners of Gu Ruofeng's mouth.
