A servant hurriedly reported that Gu Qingning had returned. Not only was she safe and sound, but she had also come back without a scratch.
Upon hearing this, Li Ruofeng raised an eyebrow in skepticism and asked the servant to confirm again. After receiving a positive response, she waited in the corridor, filled with anger, and when she finally saw Gu Qingning, she immediately blocked her path.
It was a rainy day, and the ground was slippery. Gu Qingning, pale and exhausted, spoke in a cold tone, unwilling to explain herself or feel the need to do so. She had just returned from a life-and-death ordeal, her mind still tense. When she fell off the cliff, not only did she twist her ankle, but her body was also covered in scratches.
Feeling utterly drained, she needed to take a proper bath to clean her wounds and then rest. She had no desire to continue this entanglement with Li Ruofeng here.
"Is this how you treat your elders?"
Those simple four words reached Li Ruofeng's ears, reigniting her anger. She was clearly the elder; it was one thing to have been bested by Gu Qingning twice in front of her, but now she found herself unable to stand the sight of her.
"Second Aunt, I know you care about me. If I didn't know better, I would think you were blaming me."
A chilly gust of damp wind swept through the corridor, brushing against Gu Qingning's face. She pulled her cloak tighter around herself, trying to warm up.
"I accidentally twisted my ankle on the mountain. Fortunately, a passing hero saved me; otherwise, we sisters would have already perished in that ravine."
With that explanation, she felt a bit more at ease. She really wanted to lie down and rest; if this continued, she might develop a fever again. She couldn't afford to be languishing in bed any longer—she needed rest.
"Isn't Second Aunt just concerned for you? Besides, returning in such a disheveled state is bound to raise suspicions."
Realizing that Gu Qingning was showing signs of weakness, Li Ruofeng's expression shifted like a rollercoaster—fluctuating between red and green—until finally settling into a softer tone. It wouldn't do to continue berating her now; after all, provoking Gu Qingning wasn't the main issue—what mattered more was not being able to swindle any silver from her in the future.
Letting Gu Qingning go like this left Li Ruofeng feeling somewhat unsatisfied. After thinking it over, she realized she hadn’t lost anything this time; perhaps it would be best to let it slide for now but not necessarily next time.
With that thought in mind, Li Ruofeng shifted her stance slightly. "If that's the case, you should go rest then. Second Aunt is just looking out for you; it wouldn’t be good if others misunderstood."
Gu Qingning weakly nodded in agreement.
Aunt Er had thought things through, and it was indeed my lack of consideration that led to misunderstandings from others.
The small sense of triumph in Li Ruofeng's eyes did not escape Gu Qingning's notice. She understood that Li Ruofeng still wanted to gain more benefits from her, and naturally, he would not put her in a difficult position. It was nothing more than a lot of noise with little substance, just a way to vent his frustrations.
"I'll head back to rest now. Please take your time, Aunt Er!"
Li Ruofeng lifted his head high, strutting like a victorious peacock as he walked away.
Gu Qingning stayed where she was, watching Li Ruofeng's retreating figure. She pressed her hands against her chest, her lips twitching as she nearly burst into laughter.
