Gu Qingning had never heard of a suitor sending wedding gifts in two separate installments.
"These are the betrothal gifts from our Prince to Miss Gu, a unique offering, not to be counted among royal gifts," Feng Ren explained eagerly on behalf of his master.
Pei Zhijing shot a glance at Feng Ren, who quickly closed his mouth and stood solemnly to the side.
Gu Qingning felt both amused and helpless; however, with so many gifts sent by the Prince, she had no place to put them.
Pei Zhijing's eyes were cold, his brow slightly furrowed as if deep in thought.
"These are carefully chosen by the master for Miss Gu," Feng Ren mistakenly interpreted Gu Qingning's expression and spoke hastily.
It was only on this day that Feng Ren learned that the fine items his master had been accumulating in the storeroom were all betrothal gifts for Gu Qingning.
It turned out that the master had been quietly preparing for all of this long ago.
Pei Zhijing's deep-set eyes revealed no emotion; these gifts were naturally meant for her as they were left by his mother for her daughter-in-law.
Gu Qingning, with her charming brows fluttering, was taken aback. It turned out that what her father had said was true: Consort Chen and her mother were indeed close friends, and they had even prepared her betrothal gifts well in advance.
What had started as a mere jest about an arranged marriage was something Gu Changqing had not taken seriously, yet Consort Chen and her son had taken it to heart and meticulously prepared for this day.
Looking at the scene before her, she realized that this was not just Consort Chen's affection for her but also represented Pei Zhijing's regard for her.
Suddenly, Gu Qingning felt like a great fool in her past life!
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Gu Qingning’s eyes misting over with tears, causing Pei Zhijing’s heart to twitch involuntarily.
He couldn't tell if she was moved or...
"Lv Yan, take care of this!"
Gu Qingning quickly wiped away the tears that were about to spill over and ordered Lv Yan to handle the situation.
Lv Yan hurried forward to instruct the servants to return all the boxes to her designated place, reminding them to be careful not to damage anything.
"Uncle Ming, where is my father?"
Only then did Gu Qingning remember Gu Changqing and asked the butler, Uncle Ming.
"I have already sent someone to notify Lord Hou; he should be returning to the residence soon."
Uncle Ming had once been a captain under Gu Changqing but could no longer fight on the battlefield after injuring his leg. The couple took pity on him for being orphaned and took him in to serve in their household.
He was utterly loyal to Gu Changqing. Upon receiving the message from the Ninth Prince, he immediately sent someone to the military camp to summon Gu Changqing back.
After Uncle Ming left, Zhi turned and went downstairs. Not long after, she brought a cup of tea for Pei Zhiqing, who was sitting in the front hall, and then quietly stepped out.
Gu Qingning looked at the man before her, who was anything but graceful at that moment, and truly didn't know what to say. She could only reach out to pick up the teacup and walk over.
"This is the new tea I had brought over from the Huai River. Please give it a try."
After speaking, Gu Qingning placed the tea on the table in front of Pei Zhiqing, glanced at him, and then sat down on the zitan wood chair across from him.
From the corner of her eye, she occasionally stole glances outside, her delicate fingers nervously fiddling with the handkerchief in her grasp.
The atmosphere in the front hall suddenly became a bit subtle!
Pei Zhiqing quietly observed the woman across from him, whose skin was as smooth as jade and whose beauty was striking. Her brows were light as mist, carrying a hint of playful charm. In his eyes, an unnoticeable flicker of affection passed by, as if he wished to savor this moment for a lifetime.
