Li Mama nodded with red-rimmed eyes.
Gu Yanran hurriedly left, preoccupied with handling the matters at hand. She never expected that her only younger brother would be gone just like that. In the past, she had even felt jealous of their mother’s favoritism towards him, believing that she received little care and attention—certainly not what one would expect from a qualified mother. With her brother gone and their mother’s spirit also lost, Gu Yanran could only do her utmost to stay by the mourning hall, burning paper money for him to ensure a smooth journey to the underworld and a chance to be reborn into a good family in the next life.
Li Ruofeng had barely slept for two hours when she woke up and immediately rushed to Gu Yuxuan's courtyard. No matter how Li Mama tried to stop her, she followed closely behind, supporting her while informing her that Gu Yanran was at the mourning hall.
Upon hearing this, Li Ruofeng stormed into the mourning hall and slapped Gu Yanran hard across the face. "What are you doing here? Your brother isn’t dead yet! Get up! Get up!" She could not accept the reality of Gu Yuxuan's death and unleashed all her anger on Gu Yanran.
Gu Yanran grabbed Li Ruofeng’s hand and forcefully pulled her to the coffin, pointing at Gu Yuxuan, who lay lifeless inside. "Look! He is already dead! Mother, wake up!"
Li Ruofeng stared at Gu Yuxuan in the coffin, breaking free from Gu Yanran's grip. She knelt beside the coffin, crying out in deep sorrow, trembling as she reached out a hand to gently touch his pale face, fearful of disturbing her son’s eternal slumber. "My Xuan'er! How could you leave your mother behind?"
Gu Yanran looked at Li Ruofeng helplessly but felt compelled to comfort her. "Mother, you still have me."
Tears streamed down Li Ruofeng’s face like a flood breaking through a dam. Her voice trembled with despair and sorrow. "A daughter? How can a daughter compare to a son? Xuan'er is my life!"
Her body shook violently as if the entire world was collapsing before her eyes. Her gaze was filled with pain and hopelessness.
"Why wasn’t it you? Why was it my Xuan'er?" Li Ruofeng glared fiercely at Gu Yanran, continuing to shout, "You should have died in his place!"
Her voice was laden with anguish and anger, as if she wanted to place all the blame on Gu Yanran.
Gu Yanran’s face was swollen from the slap, five distinct fingerprints visible on her skin. Her eyes were cold and resentful as she stared back at Li Ruofeng.
"If it weren’t for me, your brother would have been dead long ago," she said coldly and firmly, as if declaring her sacrifices for Gu Yuxuan.
Li Ruofeng's tears flowed like an unstoppable torrent. "You’re alive; Gu Qingning is still alive! But my Xuan'er is dead—why is that fair?"
Her heart was filled with pain and despair, as if the entire world had collapsed in that moment.
Li Ruofeng broke down in loud sobs, her voice echoing with sadness and hopelessness as if everything around her was crumbling.
Gu Yanran was also filled with anger and resentment. Her voice was icy and resolute. "I shouldn’t have been born from your womb in the first place. I can never compare to Gu Qingning; even what I worked hard to achieve has to be given to that lifeless Gu Yuxuan in the coffin. You have no right to insult me or hit me."
Li Ruofeng felt as if her heart was being torn apart. "How could you think like this?"
Collapsing onto the ground, Li Ruofeng's gaze became vacant, drifting aimlessly. With her only son gone, she no longer wished to live either.
