After returning from the Jing Wang Manor, Yin Sha informed Hong Ling that the young lady was currently unavailable and would need some time before she could be seen again.
Upon hearing this, Hong Ling left the small courtyard to prepare some food for the young lady. Inside the room, Gu Wan Ning remained silent, listening to the sounds outside. Her sister had already married into the Jing Wang Manor; she could not stay in the manor every day. She needed to learn to take care of herself to avoid worrying them.
Lying on a branch, Yin Sha's mind echoed with a haunting phrase: The prince and princess have fallen into a cliff; their whereabouts are unknown. A sense of unease washed over her, and she was so distracted that she didn't hear Hong Ling calling her several times from below the tree.
Frustrated, Hong Ling's round face flushed red as she stomped her foot and muttered to herself, "I’ll finish all the lotus root boxes later, not leaving a single one behind, humph." The little girl huffed as she marched into the inner room.
In the imperial palace's study, a eunuch hurriedly entered and bowed, reporting, "Your Majesty, the Jing Wang couple has been attacked and has fallen into a cliff; their whereabouts are unknown."
Emperor Jing threw down his brush in alarm and looked up with urgency. "What did you say?"
The eunuch cautiously repeated himself, stating that news from the Jing Wang Manor indicated that the couple had gone to Fo Guang Temple to pray for blessings when they were ambushed by assassins and fell into a cliff.
Frowning with anger, Emperor Jing ordered, "Increase the number of people searching for them. If we cannot find the Jing Wang couple, bring me their heads."
Who dares to act so audaciously beneath my feet? To lay such a deadly hand on the Jing Wang couple? He thought of how fragile life was; who would want to kill a short-lived prince?
After pondering for a moment, he summoned Pei Zhi Rui to enter the palace. Upon receiving the imperial decree, Pei Zhi Rui feigned panic as he stepped into the study.
Once inside and after exchanging greetings, Pei Zhi Rui began reporting to Emperor Jing. "Father, the flooding in the south has eased. The local government has opened granaries for porridge distribution and established temporary shelters; the elderly are safe for now."
Emperor Jing raised his hand to stop him from continuing. "Jing Er has fallen into a cliff, and his life is uncertain. You must immediately take people and find them for me."
Pei Zhi Rui looked at Emperor Jing in astonishment. His father summoned him at such a late hour for Pei Zhi Jing?
Suddenly feeling both angry and unable to voice it, he quietly said, "Isn't Ninth Brother always in the manor? They went to Fo Guang Temple to pray but unexpectedly were pursued and fell into a cliff."
The prince could leave now.
Pei Zhirui bowed respectfully and quickly exited the room. As the door to the imperial study closed behind him, a smug smile crept onto his lips.
Pei Zhiqing and Gu Qingning, you can just stay at the bottom of the cliff and be devoured by wild wolves. Why would he save his enemies? He would rather see them dead, clearing the path for himself.
At the bottom of the cliff, steep mountains surrounded them on all sides, stretching for miles without end. The moonlight hung in the night sky, casting a heavy shadow from the mountain onto the vast expanse of grass below. The trees rustled in the night breeze, as if something was stealthily approaching, sending chills down one’s spine.
Gu Qingning, who had already awakened, gasped in pain, biting her lip tightly as she surveyed her surroundings. She glanced at the heavy cloak draped over her and then looked around again, but she did not see Pei Zhiqing anywhere.
Pei Zhiqing’s cloak had been taken off and placed over her; he must have woken up long ago and gone to look for a light. Gu Qingning obediently stayed in place, waiting for Pei Zhiqing to return.
After waking up, Pei Zhiqing disregarded his own injuries and hurriedly searched for Gu Qingning.
