Gu Wan Ning woke up early in the morning to the loud commotion outside the courtyard, accompanied by the irritating cries of children. The cacophony made her head throb painfully. She sat up, rubbed her temples, and called out, "Hong Ling."
Hong Ling hurriedly opened the door and rushed in, her expression a mix of emotions as she glanced at her mistress. "Miss, did we wake you?"
"What’s going on outside? I can hear all the noise as soon as I got up; it’s quite uncomfortable," Gu Wan Ning replied. With such a ruckus outside, there was no way she could sleep. Usually, there were few disturbances at Xue Zhu Courtyard, and when there were minor squabbles, Hong Ling would handle them without her having to worry.
Hong Ling's face flushed red as she pouted, indignantly reporting, "Young Master Gu Zan snatched your osmanthus cake yesterday. Today, he passed by the entrance of Xue Zhu Courtyard and saw our large bamboo grove. The children wanted to play and insisted on coming into the courtyard to play hide-and-seek with the servants. Young Master Gu Zan refused to leave the entrance no matter what. In a fit of anger, Yin Sha picked him up and tossed him out of the courtyard. Before long, they went to complain to Second Master."
That gluttonous Yin Sha had a bad temper; without thinking twice, she had picked up the troublesome child and tossed him out effortlessly. Hong Ling hadn’t even had time to stop her.
It was only after everyone turned around that they noticed Gu Zan lying on the ground, looking disheveled and bursting into tears.
"Quick, help me wash up," Gu Wan Ning said urgently. With only Gu Zan left in the second branch of the family, if anything happened to him, it would surely cause an uproar in the household.
"Oh dear grandson, why are you lying on the ground?"
Upon hearing the report from the servants, Old Madam Gu hurried over without even having breakfast to defend Gu Zan.
The old nurse quickly went forward to help Gu Zan up from the ground while the servants crowded at the threshold of Xue Zhu Courtyard lowered their heads nervously at Old Madam's voice.
"Tell your grandmother who dared to bully you like this; I will make sure they regret it," Old Madam Gu said soothingly as she wiped his tears with a handkerchief.
Gu Si Yuan had just returned from court when Old Madam Gu rushed over out of concern for her grandson.
With snot and tears streaming down his face, Gu Zan buried himself in Old Madam's embrace and cried for a while before finally looking up at the trembling servants standing at the threshold.
He craned his neck to look around but didn’t see the maid who had thrown him out earlier.
"Hey, where did that person go? She was just here!"
Just as Gu Zan vowed to find out who it was, Hong Ling supported Gu Wan Ning as she stepped out of the room.
"It was her! She wouldn’t let me in and threw me out, causing my head to bleed! Grandmother, I don’t like her; can you please get rid of her for me?" Gu Zan whined while touching the blood seeping from his forehead.
Old Madam Gu followed Gu Zan's pointing finger and saw Gu Wan Ning and Hong Ling standing at the entrance of Xue Zhu Courtyard.
She shot a fierce glare at Gu Wan Ning, wishing she could do away with this foolish girl once and for all.
Hong Ling stubbornly shouted, "Xue Zhu Courtyard is the young lady's domain. No one is allowed to enter without her permission."
Even when Gu Wan Ning tightened her grip on Hong Ling's wrist, she couldn't silence her.
The young lady had declared that anyone who dared to force their way in would be beaten out by the glutton. The glutton might not excel in many things, but her skills were indeed impressive.
Gu Zan cried out in grievance, "Grandmother, she... I want to beat her! Beat her to death!"
The old lady Gu felt a pang of heartache and squatted down to comfort her grandson.
"How outrageous! Wan Ning, is this the kind of servant Xue Zhu Courtyard raises? So ignorant of the rules that she dares to block the master's path? Today, I will let you all see who truly holds power in the Duke of Loyalty's residence!" the old lady Gu scolded loudly.
