Although Rao Jie’s first reaction was that Wu Rong would definitely refuse, she still asked out of curiosity. After all, she had clearly rejected her senior’s advances and had publicly acknowledged her relationship with Wu Rong, leaving no room for insecurity.
However…
“Aren’t we dating? How can you casually go out with other men?”
“What do you mean by casually going out with other men? There are many classmates involved; it’s a large event. There are already a hundred people signed up from several different majors! The senior is just the organizer. Besides, didn’t he invite you to join as well? I don’t understand what you’re worried about.”
“Are you questioning me with your doubts? Since there are already so many people, does it really matter if you join or not?”
“…” Rao Jie didn’t want to say anything more.
But Wu Rong persisted, “I feel like your silence is just a way to look down on me!”
“Wu Rong, you’re overthinking this. I actually want to go out and participate in activities like this with you.”
Experiencing more things together might help bridge the gap between them. After all, Wu Rong was not only older than her but also had a richer life experience. They hardly shared any common ground; sometimes it felt like they had very few topics to discuss. Aside from eating and sleeping, there seemed to be little overlap in their lives.
So, Rao Jie was looking forward to participating in some activities together.
“No way! When I say no, I mean no!” Wu Rong's gaze turned sharp.
His attitude hurt Rao Jie. It felt as if since they started dating, Wu Rong had been very strict with her. She was his girlfriend, not his daughter.
However, Wu Rong felt he had already been accommodating to the limit. Rao Jie wanted to take things slowly, and he had complied by not being intimate with her for nearly two weeks—aside from occasional kisses—and now she wanted him to join an event organized by her former rival.
It was ridiculous.
Seeing Wu Rong's firm stance, Rao Jie didn’t want to argue. They had only just started dating; she didn’t want to create an unpleasant atmosphere and ultimately chose to compromise.
“Fine, I won’t go.”
Hearing this made Wu Rong feel a bit relieved, but when he turned around, he saw Rao Jie looking disappointed and not even glancing at him as she walked out while fiddling with her phone.
Wu Rong felt even worse inside.
Anger surged within him, but he had nowhere to direct it.
The next morning, the atmosphere between them was somewhat gloomy. During this time, due to Wu Rong’s possessive behavior at the Dessert Shop and Rao Jie’s repeated requests, he had stopped spending time there altogether. At most, he would drop her off in the morning and pick her up in the evening; otherwise, he returned home to continue his research.
However, they had a customary agreement that before Rao Jie got out of the car, she had to give Wu Rong a kiss. But today, the atmosphere was too tense for Rao Jie to do so, and she awkwardly said goodbye and exited the vehicle. This only made Wu Rong even angrier.
Once home, he spent the entire day staring at documents, but he couldn't focus on anything. He felt he couldn't grasp the right balance in his relationship with Rao Jie. How could he make both of them happy? He disliked the awkward tension that hung between them.
If he were to express his ideal way of being together, it would be for Rao Jie to stay by his side and not go anywhere else, not to ignore him for the sake of others or resist him. He wanted to see her all the time, to feel her presence. Whenever he desired to hold or kiss her, he wanted to be able to follow his heart and act freely without restraint.
