However, it seemed that Rao Jie did not want things to go this way.
As she lost herself in such thoughts, the day quickly passed. Approaching evening, Wu Rong remembered he needed to pick someone up. Just as he was about to head out, he received a message from Rao Jie.
Jie Jie: "I have to work overtime today. You can have dinner by yourself; the manager will drop me off on the way back. Don’t worry."
Wu Rong immediately tossed his phone onto the sofa, his expression darkening to the point of almost dripping ink.
On the other side, Rao Jie put her phone away, a hint of worry on her face. The manager, a middle-aged woman, noticed her demeanor and said apologetically, "Is your boyfriend upset? If so, you can go home; I can manage alone."
Rao Jie awkwardly shook her head. Everyone was helping her; how could she just leave? "It's fine; I've explained it to him." He should understand, right?
Yet, why did she feel an unsettling sense of adding fuel to the fire? Rao Jie shook her head and decided not to dwell on it.
The overtime stretched until nine o'clock at night, and it was still the manager who drove her back to the neighborhood.
Rao Jie brought back a fruit cake she had made—Wu Rong's favorite—hoping to cheer him up. She didn’t want their awkwardness to linger any longer.
Wu Rong was like a child with a temper; if she could just soothe him a little, he would be easily placated. With this mindset, Rao Jie felt herself smiling as her steps quickened with excitement to see Wu Rong again. She really missed him.
However, when she returned home, she was startled by Wu Rong sitting on the sofa with a dark expression, completely still.
In all their time together, she had never seen Wu Rong this angry before. Rao Jie sensed that her overtime had likely fueled his rising frustration.
Before her stood a lion ready to pounce.
Clearing her throat, Rao Jie held up the cake box and said, "I brought you a fruit cake that I made myself. Want to come eat?"
Pretending not to notice his sullen face, she calmly placed the box on the dining table.
Wu Rong didn’t respond but followed her over nonetheless.
"Are you mad at me? Because I didn’t let you attend Long Yong’s event?" Wu Rong's icy voice suddenly rang out from behind her, startling Rao Jie.
Rao Jie adjusted his mood and said, "No... I'm a bit disappointed, but I'm not angry. I really just want to experience more things with you, not just stay at home all day. Isn't it nice to create some memories together?"
"Are you tired of me?" Wu Rong asked urgently.
Rao Jie was a bit speechless; how could he jump to that conclusion?
Turning to look at Wu Rong, who was frowning and looking frustrated, Rao Jie felt a pang of reluctance. He decided to abandon the explanation and wrapped his arms around Wu Rong's shoulders, giving him a proactive kiss to help ease his anger.
"Does this prove it? I'm not tired of you at all; I still like you."
Wu Rong's eyes darkened slightly, and his hands instinctively found their way to Rao Jie's slender waist.
"Then show me."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Wu Rong lifted Rao Jie off the ground completely.
"Ah? What are you doing?"
Wu Rong narrowed his eyes dangerously, tilting his head back to look at Rao Jie. "I've been holding back for days. Just because we’re sleeping in separate rooms doesn’t mean I’m abstaining!"
Rao Jie couldn't help but blush, feeling a bit nervous as he patted Wu Rong's shoulder. "Let's talk nicely."
But Wu Rong ignored him, carrying Rao Jie straight toward the bedroom. "You said you would show me."
