As Zhu Chen's words left his lips, Du Hengyan behind him sighed in exasperation, pressing his forehead with a hand. He couldn't help but wonder what kind of people he had raised. How could they not know what to say at such a critical moment? Wasn't this just making things worse?
"Huh?"
Chi Mu Jiu was taken aback by the response, momentarily at a loss for words. Was this person a bit unhinged? She silently mused, taking a sharp breath.
"Miss Chi, please don't misunderstand. What Mr. Zhu means is that he doesn't recognize you. I switched your room because Mr. Zhu thought one of his guests was here and mistook you for them," Ye Jue hurriedly interjected, speaking rapidly in an attempt to defuse the awkward situation, fearing that Chi Mu Jiu might not believe him.
Chi Mu Jiu eyed the three of them suspiciously, her gaze darting across their faces. She felt that things were not as simple as they seemed, yet she couldn't pinpoint what exactly felt off. It was as if a fog enveloped her mind, making her want to investigate but leaving her unsure of where to start.
But then again, it made sense; Du Hengyan had been working as a male model abroad. How could he possibly know so many top figures in the domestic business circles?
Chi Mu Jiu tried to rationalize this strange situation in her mind. However, this explanation seemed insufficient to completely quell her doubts.
"Yes, that's exactly what Mr. Ye meant. I'm not good with words; you and your friend are wearing masks, so I mistook you for someone else. I hope you can forgive me, Miss Chi," Zhu Chen quickly added, his face adorned with an apologetic smile as he attempted to convince Chi Mu Jiu of his explanation.
"Oh, I see now, Mr. Zhu. I truly apologize for any misunderstanding," Chi Mu Jiu replied, though her inner doubts had not entirely dissipated.
Her gaze fell once more on Du Hengyan, searching for any clues in his expression. However, his mask concealed his true feelings from view.
Zhu Chen and Ye Jue secretly breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that Chi Mu Jiu had temporarily accepted their explanation. Yet they both knew that this matter was far from over; they needed to be even more cautious moving forward to prevent the situation from becoming more complicated and difficult to manage. Both remained tense, unwilling to relax even slightly.
Chi Mu Jiu pressed her lips together slightly, the confusion in her heart still lingering.
The atmosphere in the room remained subtly charged, each person lost in their own thoughts.
"Miss Chi, after the auction concludes, please be sure to join the banquet with your friend. There will be even more exciting content at the banquet. To express my apologies, I will cover all expenses for you and your friend tonight."
Zhu Zhen quickly spoke up, trying to change the subject and ease the awkward atmosphere.
"Then we won't disturb you two any longer. Please, continue," he said hurriedly, as he and Ye Jue left in a rush, as if something terrifying was chasing them.
The room fell silent again. Chi Mu Jiu looked up at Du Heng Yan, her eyes filled with questions. But Du Heng Yan merely patted her shoulder gently, remaining silent.
Chi Mu Jiu's confusion deepened; she had no idea what would happen next.
"Du Heng Yan, are you hiding something from me?"
"No."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Probably. The thing you're interested in is coming."
Du Heng Yan gestured for her to look towards the exhibition table below.
The centerpiece of the collection was slowly rising from the surface.
A Graff Pink Diamond.
