At the exit of the back door, the sunlight poured down, almost blinding.
Chi Mu Jiu stood not far from the exit, pulling out her phone to open the chat interface from last night with her father. The brief exchange felt like a cold barrier separating them.
After a moment of focus, she typed out a message and sent it:
"As the eldest daughter of the Chi family, I have attended the press conference. From now on, everything else is none of my business."
Pausing for a moment after sending that, she typed another line:
"Father, you are on your own."
The matters concerning the Chi family were done for her. As long as the shares were in her hands, no matter how much Chi Qi Yun stirred things up, she wouldn’t be able to cause any trouble.
However, at that moment, she felt no sense of relief. Just as she had settled her family affairs, here came Pei Si. If she had to blame anyone, it was herself for not considering the true dangers of the underground industry at that time.
Chi Mu Jiu sighed, trying to push these annoying thoughts aside. But just as she stepped past the railing at the back door exit, she heard distant shouts from the crowd.
"Miss Chi! Miss Chi! Can you say a few words?"
The reporters' calls surged toward her like a tidal wave.
"Can you tell us more about your husband?"
Chi Mu Jiu thought that by exiting through a secure passage, she could avoid these ever-present reporters. But as soon as she showed her face, it was over. She had underestimated this group of people.
In the blink of an eye, she found herself surrounded with no way out; microphones and recording devices were practically shoved in her face. In this crowded scene, unless the ground suddenly opened up beneath her, there was no escaping this tight circle of reporters pressing in from all sides.
"Miss Chi, why didn’t your husband come with you to the press conference today?"
"Miss Chi, are you married? Is it a secret marriage?"
Listening to the increasingly outrageous questions from the reporters, Chi Mu Jiu still tried to maintain a polite smile and replied, "I'm sorry, I have no comment."
But the reporters were not willing to let go of this rare opportunity easily; they continued to surround her, refusing to disperse. Amidst the pushing and shoving, the bodyguards from the Ye family finally arrived, forcing their way through the throng of frenzied reporters.
With the bodyguards escorting her, Chi Mu Jiu got into the car. Even as the vehicle slowly pulled away, several reporters continued to chase after it, desperately seeking any hint of news, seemingly unwilling to give up without a fight.
Chi Mu Jiu turned her head away, no longer looking at the chaotic scene behind her. The crowd had been so dense that it was inevitable she would bump into her injury. She gently removed the sleeve from her arm and examined the wound closely.
A slender scratch marked her skin, its edges slightly reddened. The surrounding flesh was a bit swollen, but fortunately, it didn’t seem too serious. She let out a small sigh of relief and put her sleeve back on to cover the injury.
"Miss, are we heading home?" the driver asked cautiously.
Leaning back against the leather seat, Chi Mu Jiu closed her beautiful eyes for a moment before answering calmly, "Yes, home."
The driver inquired again, "What about this afternoon's collaboration banquet?"
In a steady tone, Chi Mu Jiu replied, "I won't be attending. After you drop me off at home, take a few days off. I'll contact you if I need the car again."
The driver understood her meaning and nodded in agreement without saying anything further. Chi Mu Jiu knew he had grasped what she was implying. After all, he was hired by Du Heng Yan. If Du Heng Yan found out about her plans to go abroad for gambling, she could hardly imagine how he would react.
It was better not to mention it for now; Chi Mu Jiu thought quietly to herself.
As the car slowly drove into the suburban villa area, Zhi Mu keenly noticed that there were several more cars parked at the entrance than usual.
In that instant, she understood; it must be people from Pei Si. The fact that they could even find her address made her realize that Pei Si's earlier attitude towards her in the car had been somewhat courteous.
