The motion of Chi Mu Jiu changing her shoes came to a halt.
A familiar fragrance lingered in the air, one she had only caught a whiff of a few hours earlier.
Pei Si!
The name sprang to her mind, and Chi Mu Jiu's eyes widened in shock, even her breath caught in her throat: No way? Is this for real?
"Miss Chi."
The light, airy address floated into her ears like a melodious tune from the living room.
Chi Mu Jiu felt as if she had been struck by a spell, frozen in place, her mind blank. The only sound that echoed in her ears was the rapid beating of her heart.
Silence—an oppressive, deathly silence—enveloped the entire room.
Chi Mu Jiu stared toward the living room, her gaze filled with astonishment and wariness.
She watched as Pei Si moved from the living room to the entrance hall. Her eyes involuntarily fell upon this uninvited man.
He was handsome and well-defined; beneath his high nose, his thin lips curled slightly upward, hinting at a smile.
His blue eyes sparkled with light as he scrutinized Chi Mu Jiu, as if she were the one who had intruded into someone else's home.
"You! How did you get in here?"
Chi Mu Jiu looked at this living person standing before her, appearing so effortlessly in her home without a sound. The expression on her face was nothing but shock.
"Miss Chi, don’t be nervous."
Pei Si raised his hands in a gesture of peace, indicating he meant no harm.
But how could Chi Mu Jiu believe him? To her, his sudden appearance was far too abrupt, completely without warning.
"Nervous or not, you’ve trespassed! I can call the police on you!"
Only then did Chi Mu Jiu snap back to reality; she was indeed frightened by Pei Si, her voice tinged with anger and fear.
The time of return was in the afternoon; if it had been evening, she might have been scared out of her wits. As she spoke, she took out her phone and dialed the police.
Pei Si noticed her seriousness and seemed a bit anxious. "Please don’t be upset, Miss Chi. I apologize for my abruptness; I just have something else to discuss with you."
His tone carried a hint of regret, but his gaze remained resolute. Hearing this, Chi Mu Jiu hesitated to press the call button but couldn't help but retort, "Mr. Pei, if you have something to say, why not wait until you’re at my doorstep? Must you resort to such illegal antics?"
She was quite displeased with Pei Si's behavior. "If we wait at my door, wouldn’t that expose us?"
Pei Si stepped closer, his eyes glancing at the high heels she wore.
"Expose? You make it sound as if we have some secret dealings."
(Though it did seem that way.)
Chi Mu Jiu followed his gaze, unsure whether he was looking at the men's slippers on the lower shoe rack or something else entirely.
"Miss Chi, there's no need to force yourself into uncomfortable shoes."
Pei Si's voice lacked the penetrating quality of Du Heng Yan’s, yet there was an irresistible charm in his demeanor that made it hard for others to resist.
"What?"
Chi Mu Jiu found his comment somewhat baffling.
Pei Si smiled lightly and pointed at her heel.
Chi Mu Jiu looked down again and realized her ankle was red from the friction of the high heels.
How meddlesome!
She rolled her eyes internally, thinking to herself that she could wear whatever she liked! "So Mr. Pei, you broke into my house just to tell me that my high heels don’t fit?"
Late in the evening, Jiu's sharp tongue showed no mercy.
Pei Si, however, remained unfazed, his blue eyes reflecting a hint of deeper emotions.
