Following the sound, she saw two dapper men in suits striding towards her and Du Hengyan, holding exquisite wine glasses and wearing enthusiastic smiles, their eyes filled with surprise and respect.
"Oh my! It's really Mr. Du!" one of them exclaimed excitedly. "I heard you might attend this event, but I thought it was just a rumor. I can't believe you're actually here!"
Chi Mu Jiu listened closely, realizing that Du Hengyan also disliked the boastful and tedious social activities typical of the business world.
Du Hengyan did not immediately take the wine glass offered by the man; instead, his gentle gaze slowly turned to Chi Mu Jiu, who was tightly clinging to him.
In that moment, she understood—he was asking for her opinion. Could they drink?
"No," Chi Mu Jiu thought, feeling a surge of delight. "Du Hengyan, must you be so considerate? It’s going to make me fall for you even more!"
She nodded slightly, greeting the two men while returning a silent look of approval to Du Hengyan.
Receiving her consent, Du Hengyan elegantly accepted the glass of red wine.
"Mr. Du, are you married?!" The man’s face was filled with shock, his voice rising a few octaves as if he had just heard earth-shattering news.
"I never expected Mr. Du to truly dote on his wife!"
The man continued in disbelief. This was the same Mr. Du who held immense power in the business world and had always maintained a clean reputation without any rumors surrounding him—yet he was married?
All eyes turned toward Chi Mu Jiu, astonished.
His wife was stunningly beautiful; her delicate features and gentle demeanor clearly marked her as a quintessential Eastern beauty.
Some guests further away couldn’t hear their conversation clearly but could grasp about half of it.
Chi Mu Jiu felt the gazes around her intensifying as they scrutinized her more openly.
The ladies attending the event were chatting by the pool in the backyard. "Madam, if you'd like to take a look around, I can arrange for someone to accompany you," one man enthusiastically suggested.
However, before he could finish speaking, Du Hengyan interrupted directly: "No need. My wife prefers peace and quiet; let her wander freely."
He gently waved his hand, and several bodyguards from the banquet approached. The two men exchanged glances, hesitant to say anything further, realizing that Du Hengyan clearly did not trust them to protect his wife.
Chi Mu Jiu's beautiful eyes flickered as she instantly grasped the deeper meaning behind Du Hengyan's words. In this grand and luxurious banquet, with dazzling lights and a crowd of guests, discussions about various business matters were inevitable. However, Chi Mu Jiu found herself utterly uninterested in such affairs; her mind was not in the midst of this commercial clamor. After all, Du Hengyan had brought her to the banquet merely to alleviate her boredom.
If she were to stay by Du Hengyan's side without leaving even a step, this banquet would become utterly dull for her. With this thought in mind, a slight smile curved her lips.
"Alright, I'll go take a look over there first and come back to find you later," she said, her voice gentle and clear like a pleasant melody.
Du Hengyan nodded, his eyes filled with tenderness. "Yes, my lady, please don’t hold back on my account."
His words were laced with affection. Chi Mu Jiu smiled sweetly. "Of course!"
With that, she turned gracefully, her skirt swaying slightly as she moved with elegance, leaving behind a captivating silhouette. Du Hengyan's gaze followed her until she disappeared into the courtyard, at which point he slowly withdrew his eyes.
The scenery in the back courtyard was as beautiful as a dreamlike painting, even more romantic and exquisite. Chi Mu Jiu walked slowly through it, curiously looking around and noticing that there wasn't a single gentleman present.
