"Have you seen my phone?" Chi Mu Jiu asked as she prepared to crawl under the bed when it was time to disembark.
Du Heng Yan quickly stopped her. "Don't move, sweetheart. I'll get it."
As he spoke, he effortlessly lifted her off the ground. Sometimes, Chi Mu Jiu felt that Du Heng Yan was like an elder, caring for her in every way. This must be what they call a 'dad-type boyfriend,' she thought.
She obediently sat on the bed, watching as Du Heng Yan dialed her number. Soon, a familiar ringtone echoed from between the bed's crevices. Du Heng Yan lifted a cushion and shifted the corner of the bed to retrieve the phone that had gotten stuck, handing it back to Chi Mu Jiu.
"Next time, make sure to hold onto your phone properly, my lady."
Chi Mu Jiu rolled her eyes at him. Who could argue with him? His incessant chatter was relentless. She mumbled under her breath but maintained a calm expression.
When she unlocked her phone, she was surprised to see dozens of missed calls and messages. Ever since arriving in this foreign country, no one from home had reached out to her, as if she had vanished from their world. This made her feel somewhat relieved, yet it also felt like she had severed ties with the Chi family.
Furrowing her brows, she opened her contacts. The last few calls were from her family, while the dozens that followed were from Su Si Yi trying to reach her.
"What happened? Why are you frowning so deeply?" Du Hengyan noticed her unease.
"It's about home," Chi Mu Jiu sighed softly, slowly handing her phone to Du Hengyan. The screen displayed a series of messages from Su Siyu.
"Mu Jiu, Uncle is sick. Where are you right now?"
"The Chi family's group and company are in chaos."
"Qi Yun and Lei Ji have joined forces to take over the remaining shares of the Chi family."
"Really causing trouble," Du Hengyan's expression darkened as he decisively dialed a number from Chi Mu Jiu's phone.
The phone rang for only a few seconds before it was answered. Without waiting for the other person to speak, Du Hengyan coldly said, "It's me. Give me an update on the Chi family's situation."
On the other end, Ye Jue was taken aback to hear Du Hengyan's voice. After a brief pause, he quickly responded, "Yes, boss. The Chi family's movements have been quite significant lately. The entire city is buzzing with rumors that the second young lady of the Chi family is going to take over the family business. Internally, everyone is on edge, and various factions are watching closely. If it weren't for some still wary of the Ye family's influence, things might have escalated further..."
"Get to the point," Du Hengyan interrupted, his brow slightly furrowed and a hint of impatience in his eyes. He didn't want to waste time on unnecessary chatter, especially when he saw his beloved wife’s furrowed brow and worried expression.
"The second young lady of the Chi family wants to ally with several other prominent families in the city, with the Lei family at the forefront. I heard they have recently aligned themselves with a powerful new force."
"Have you investigated?" Du Hengyan's voice was icy, penetrating through the phone and causing Ye Jue to shiver involuntarily.
His boss remained as cold and unyielding as ever.
Without the boss's orders, we didn't dare to make a move.
