It seemed to be raining.
Chi Mu Jiu's consciousness was somewhat hazy, yet she could still faintly hear the sound of rain outside the window. The cold wind blew in through the high window, lowering the temperature in the interrogation room even further. She was incredibly tired; the position of propping her head up with her hand had become unsustainable, so she simply laid her head down on the interrogation chair, turning to the side and preparing to drift back to sleep.
The door to the interrogation room opened, and Lu Jin Zhi walked in. Holding a file in his hand, his gaze immediately fell upon the sleeping Chi Mu Jiu. Her long eyelashes fluttered slightly, and her delicate features appeared serene and elegant. It seemed she had been asleep for a while.
Lu Jin Zhi himself was quite handsome. His facial contours were sharp, and his features were strikingly defined. Especially his sword-like eyebrows, which gave him an aura of vigor and authority. Coupled with his professional demeanor, he exuded an undeniable sense of justice.
The documents in his hand contained Chi Mu Jiu's personal profile. The eldest daughter of the Chi family, Chi Mu Jiu. Her academic history was clearly detailed within the file. It was the first time Lu Jin Zhi had seen someone sleep so soundly in an interrogation room.
He paused for a moment as he flipped through the documents, listening to the small woman across from him mumbling something as if she were talking in her sleep.
"Are you cold?" he wondered aloud, momentarily halting his actions.
The weather was just fine for a man like him, who was strong and accustomed to regular exercise, to wear casual clothes. But for Chi Mu Jiu, it was different. After all, she was a young lady, and it wouldn’t be acceptable for her to catch a cold while in his care.
Lu Jin Zhi stood up to grab the coat draped over the chair, but then seemed to remember something. He paused for a moment before sitting back down.
Footsteps echoed from outside, followed by someone pushing the door open.
“Lu Team, there you are! I’ve been looking all over for you,” said the young officer who had been there earlier.
The young officer turned his head to look at the already sleeping Chi Mu Jiu and couldn’t help but chuckle. “I didn’t expect the young lady from the Chi family to be so carefree. It’s freezing outside, yet she can sleep so soundly in the interrogation room. The only ones who can’t sleep well here are the criminals.”
Lu Jin Zhi wasn’t sure if the remark was meant to defend Chi Mu Jiu or if it was just how he naturally spoke.
“Yes, yes, you’re right! I’ll take your advice!” The young officer scratched his head awkwardly. “Why does it feel like Lu Team is acting a bit strange today?”
“Have the results come in?” Lu Jin Zhi asked.
“They’re on their way. They said there’s nothing unusual—just ordinary wood ash, just like what Miss Chi mentioned,” replied the young officer.
“Lu Team, if you ask me, Miss Chi’s move was both clever and beautiful. Think about it; this person came armed to disturb her mother’s grave, yet she managed to keep her composure and put on such a performance.”
“Indeed, one should never provoke women, especially intelligent ones.”
“Mind your discipline,” Lu Jin Zhi interjected lightly, merely reminding him with that one sentence.
“It seems both of you officers are quite concerned about my Chi family,” he added.
At that moment, Chi Mu Jiu took over the conversation.
Lu Jin Zhi glanced over, locking eyes with Chi Mu Jiu. Her beautiful eyes were clear but carried a hint of fatigue.
The young officer fell silent. The two exchanged glances and almost simultaneously averted their gazes.
The affairs of the Chi family in the city were hardly a secret. Anyone paying attention to the development of the business district would have heard something about it.
