Receiving no reply from Du Hangyan, Chi Mu Jiu couldn't help but speculate that he might still be occupied with his tasks. Perhaps she was overthinking the delay in his response.
"Let me know immediately if there’s any news from Ye Jue," she instructed Jin Su as she stepped through the door.
"Of course, Madam. It’s already lunchtime. What would you like to eat? The brothers can prepare something for you," Jin Su replied.
"No need to trouble yourselves. I’m feeling a bit tired and would like to take a nap first. I’ll think about food when I wake up," Chi Mu Jiu declined. She wasn’t making excuses; she genuinely felt exhausted, likely due to the overwhelming number of tasks piling up recently, which had left her mentally drained and sleepy. She had been dozing off in the car just moments ago.
Seeing her state, Jin Su nodded in understanding without pressing further. Once Chi Mu Jiu closed her bedroom door, Jin Su turned and left with a sense of relief.
She fell asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow. If it weren’t for the urgent need to use the bathroom, she wouldn’t have wanted to move at all. Outside, there was no moonlight, only the silent glow of street lamps illuminating the dark night. The reason she had chosen to buy a house in the suburbs was precisely for this tranquility.
"Madam, you’re awake!"
Chi Mu Jiu heard someone calling her from the balcony. Looking down, she saw Jin Su and two of the brothers waving at her from beside their car.
"Be careful not to catch a cold; it’s chilly tonight!" one of them called out.
Chi Mu Jiu nodded in acknowledgment. Du Hangyan’s trusted aides were indeed diligent; just a word from him could keep them on duty all night without complaint.
"Madam, would you like to join us for hot pot?" another brother asked.
"Sure, I’ll be down shortly. It’s on me; gather everyone who hasn’t slept yet," Chi Mu Jiu responded, feeling hungry and craving something spicy at just the right moment.
As she turned to enter the bedroom, Jin Su reminded her to grab an extra coat.
The hot pot restaurant was bustling during the autumn season, especially in the evenings when it was packed with diners. There were no private rooms available, so with Jin Su and her group of six, they managed to find a square table in the main dining area that could accommodate them perfectly.
After settling into a slightly spacious spot, Chi Mu Jiu took her seat, and the others followed suit.
"Madam, we won't hold back then," one of the brothers said.
Chi Mu Jiu glanced at the electronic menu and noticed that nearly every meat dish had been ordered in double portions. It made sense; aside from her, everyone at the table was a burly man, so it was only natural for them to eat more meat.
Before long, dishes began to arrive one after another, and the brothers all used their chopsticks in unison.
"Madam, you should try this; it won't taste good if it gets cold."
"Madam, this one's ready too; it's a good mix of meat and vegetables."
"Would you like some shrimp paste?"
Before Chi Mu Jiu could respond to the previous question, another brother was already serving her more food. It was clear that the kind of boss one had influenced the behavior of their subordinates. When she dined with Du Heng Yan, he would also insist on filling her bowl to the brim before he would stop.
"You all eat; don’t be so polite," she said, feeling a bit uncomfortable. It felt like dining with a group of substitutes for Du Heng Yan.
Speaking of Du Heng Yan, Chi Mu Jiu instinctively glanced at her phone but saw no missed calls or messages.
"Has it wrapped up over there?" she asked while munching on some greens, directing her question to the others at the table.
"The boss is making big moves this time," one of the brothers replied. "They reported that they’re going after the biggest target at the underground gambling den; it won’t be over so soon."
Jin Su added reassuringly, "Madam, don’t worry. Based on the boss's usual style, they should be collecting spoils right about now."
