Inside the city, it was the season of winter.
The biting cold wind cut through every inch of space like a sharp knife, announcing the harshness of the winter season. The streets and alleys seemed to have been muted by nature, with few pedestrians in sight. Only the office workers, huddled in their heavy coats, braved the chill, leaving deep footprints in the snow with each step, as if they were inscribing the struggles and busyness of life.
"Boss, that's about the situation. The profits for this quarter have already been transferred to Madam's card," said Ning Chen as he settled into a café within the Chijia Group building. His gaze was drawn to the swirling snow outside. He furrowed his brow slightly, as if lost in some memory, a complex emotion flickering in his eyes.
"Boss, it's snowing here," he said into the phone, his voice calm, but Du Hengyan could still sense something was off.
"What's wrong? Are you reminiscing about that mission we had together in the snow?" Du Hengyan's voice came through with a hint of teasing.
"Well, the snowflakes here don’t have any shape," Ning Chen replied with a smile, trying to keep his tone light, though there was an undercurrent of subtle bitterness in his expression.
"Long-distance calls are expensive. If you have time to reminisce, you might as well get some work done. Should I still transfer your salary to that card at home this month?" Du Hengyan's side was evening; while it wasn't snowing there, winter rain tapped against the window with a rhythmic sound.
By the warm fireplace, his beloved wife and child nestled comfortably on the soft sofa. Watching their peaceful sleeping faces brought an involuntary smile to his lips, filled with happiness.
"Thank you, Boss," Ning Chen replied.
"Ning Chen, follow your heart; that's what we all hope to see." Du Hengyan understood Ning Chen's character well. He was like a bottomless lake—calm on the surface but rich in emotions beneath. Among all his brothers, Ning Chen's feelings were the most subdued. He wouldn’t say much, but anyone who interacted with him could sense his inner softness.
Du Hengyan recalled what Jiu Jiu had said: such men were precisely the easiest to handle.
He couldn't help but furrow his brow, pondering to himself: How does my wife know that this kind of man is the easiest to handle? There’s something wrong, something very wrong!

After finishing the call, Du Hengyan stood up and walked towards the couch where the drowsy Zhi Mu Jiu lay in a daze. He gently approached his wife, crouching down beside her, looking at her with tenderness in his eyes, filled with love, as he reached out to lightly brush a strand of hair from her face.
After hearing the busy tone on the phone, Ning Chen let out a long sigh. His gaze remained fixed on the snowy landscape outside the window, but his thoughts drifted back to the past. It seemed he had been in the city for quite some time now; ever since he attended the Zhi family’s press conference last time, his boss had arranged for him and Xiao Xiao to take over all of the Zhi family's business operations alongside his wife.
During this time, he had witnessed the changing seasons of the city and the growing strength of the Zhi family's business. Although he hadn’t faced the life-and-death struggles of gunfire like before, the business world was no less a battlefield without smoke. Here, every decision could determine the rise or fall of their enterprise, and every negotiation felt like a battle without gunfire. He and Xiao Xiao bore immense responsibility, working hard every day for the development of their business.
A notification chimed softly from his phone, sending ripples through the café. Some nearby white-collar workers on their break were drawn by the sound and cast envious glances in Ning Chen's direction. The screen lit up with messages from Du Hengyan:
“Of course, if you work two jobs, you should get paid for both. End of story.”
