Ning Chen looked at the message on his phone screen, a smile curling at the corners of his mouth, rising like the steam from the coffee cup on the table. He truly felt fortunate to have encountered such a good boss; over the years, he had never been treated poorly by this man who stood by him through thick and thin.
In this world filled with conflicts over interests, having such genuine camaraderie was incredibly rare. Among his brothers, Ning Chen was one of the few who came from a family, but his background was humble, and the burdens of life had pressed down on him from an early age.
Fate's mischief did not stop there; he had even been deceived by relatives and sold as a lowly laborer in another country. The hardships he endured were countless, and the suffering he faced—hunger and beatings—seemed insignificant in comparison. It wasn't until he met Du Hengyan that those dark days began to improve. "Ning, you've been sitting here alone for a while. Are you feeling down?"
Outside the floor-to-ceiling window, snowflakes drifted through the air as Ning Chen heard a sweet, melodic voice that pulled his wandering gaze back into focus. Turning his head, he saw it was Shu Wen speaking to him.
He remembered her because this newly arrived diplomat always seemed to find him whenever he sat alone in the café.
"No," he replied politely, taking a sip of his coffee before looking back out the window.
Ning Chen was handsome, and years spent navigating the underground trading scene had given him an air of cool detachment. His high nose and slightly pursed lips always carried a hint of seriousness. Yet it was precisely this unique aura that had won him the hearts of many exceptional women in his circle.
After all, he was tall, mature, with a dignified posture and outstanding talents; most importantly, he knew how to make money. To those women, Ning Chen represented an ideal partner—who could resist such allure?
Shu Wen seemed accustomed to Ning Chen's indifference as she took a seat across from him. "I see you enjoy espresso; you always order this type of coffee," she remarked, intentionally or not trying to spark a conversation, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Some around them had discreetly moved away while others pretended to take a break but were secretly observing how this iceberg-like Ning Chen would respond to Shu Wen's enthusiasm.
Having mingled in the dark trading world for many years, Ning Chen could easily see through people's intentions. He frowned slightly and replied, "Hmm."
She only replied with a concise word, hoping that this woman would understand his meaning and stop her persistent pursuit. Ning was indeed a man of unique taste and charm.
Shuwen smiled, stirring her dark coffee in the cup. Her small round face featured deep dimples, making her smile look sweet and captivating. Today, she also ordered a cup of espresso—bitter, so bitter that it was hard to swallow.
Ning Chen listened to her words and turned his gaze back to the little woman who was trying hard to engage him in conversation. "Miss Shuwen, your Ministry of Foreign Affairs has performed quite well in recent months. However, I hope that when you encounter difficult clients or those uninterested in your products, you can adjust your communication style or contracting strategies."
His tone was calm, but the implication was clear: he did not want any emotional entanglements with Shuwen, so he used work-related topics to hint at his intentions.
Silence and awkwardness quickly appeared on Shuwen's face; her smile froze instantly, and a hint of panic and embarrassment flashed in her eyes. She hadn't expected Ning Chen to respond this way. The people around them, who had been quietly observing, began to whisper among themselves.
"I told you, what kind of man is Ning? How could he be swayed by just a few words and a couple of cups of coffee?" one woman said softly.
"It's obvious that Ning has someone in his heart; we should avoid making ourselves uncomfortable," another agreed.
"I think Ning and Xiao are a perfect match," another voice chimed in, prompting nods of agreement from those nearby.
(The Executive Vice President is subordinate to the Chairman, which means Ning Chen is Xiao Xiao's right-hand man.)
