I woke up in a cold environment, the sharp scent of disinfectant assaulting my nostrils. Before me was a hazy blue light, and my limbs were firmly restrained on the operating table, rendering me immobile.
"Awake?" Li Xudong's voice came from nearby. "It seems the dosage was just right."
I strained to turn my head and saw him standing in front of a machine, adjusting something. The laboratory flickered with an eerie blue glow, the walls lined with surveillance cameras, and countless petri dishes neatly arranged on shelves, filled with strange fluorescent liquids.
"Where is this?" I croaked.
"The underground laboratory of Sublimation Hospital," he replied, turning around with a triumphant smile. "The Life Power Bank has revealed its unique value in your hands."
A chill ran down my spine as I saw that familiar small device being toyed with in his grasp.
"What do you want?" I asked.
"What do I want?" He chuckled softly. "Of course, to complete my research. Do you know? This thing was originally created by me before it was stolen."
He stepped closer, leaning down. "Life Energy—what a miraculous thing. It can prolong life, even... grant immortality."
"You've gone mad!" I exclaimed sharply.
"Mad?" He shook his head. "Do you think you're just a lucky fool who stumbled upon a treasure? No, you're merely a pawn in the grand scheme."
Suddenly, I recalled the words of the Old Daoist from the temple: "Benefactor, your fate should not end."
"Where's Zhu Qi?" I suddenly remembered my friend.
"Oh, your friend," Li Xudong said, turning to point at another operating table where Zhu Qi lay, his face as pale as paper. "He's currently our best test subject."
"Let him go!" I shouted, struggling with all my might.
"Don't waste your energy," he said, walking over to Zhu Qi. "Do you know? For years, I've been researching how to extract and store Life Energy. And this Power Bank, after charging you, has finally reached perfection. It can now absorb energy from anyone."
I stared at him intently. "After charging me?"
"Hahaha," he laughed. "You don't need to know that much."
I glanced around and suddenly noticed an inconspicuous Electric Box in the corner of the lab. A faint red light flickered there, different from the glow of the other monitoring devices.
"Let's begin the experiment," Li Xudong said as he put on gloves. "Let me see what kind of effect he can achieve now."
At that moment, I felt a warmth emanating from the coins in my pocket. I closed my eyes and suddenly realized I could sense the flow of all Life Energy around me.
Zhu Qi's life force was weak, while Li Xudong was surrounded by abnormal energy fluctuations. More importantly, I could control the energy fluctuations within my own body.
"Dean Li," I suddenly spoke up, "are you sure you truly understand Life Energy?"
"What do you mean?"
"Do you want to know how to use Life Energy as a weapon?" I said with a mysterious smile.
The moment he drew closer, I concentrated all my willpower and directed the remaining Life Energy within me toward the Electric Box.
"Boom!"
Blinding sparks flew everywhere, plunging the entire laboratory into darkness. The alarm blared sharply, and the red light of the backup power flickered.
Taking advantage of this moment, I exerted all my strength to break free from my restraints and dashed toward Zhu Qi.
"Stop!" Li Xudong's furious shout echoed from behind.
But I had already lifted Zhu Qi onto my back and, amidst the chaos, rushed toward the emergency exit. Behind me, I could hear hurried footsteps and angry curses, but at that moment, one thought consumed my mind:
Survive. I must survive!
