Su Ying gently lifted the Azure Blue Porcelain Teapot, giving it a slight shake before elegantly sweeping her sleeve to carefully pour the tea from the pot into a blue-and-white teacup.
A pale green leaf floated slowly on the surface of the tea, and as Su Ying blew gently across it, delicate ripples spread outwards. She then raised the cup to her lips and took a small sip.
“Cai Zhu, go summon the Side Consort to come and pay her respects to me,” Su Ying instructed, glancing at the still-empty path in front of Jin Yuan. She set down her porcelain cup, contemplating that Fu Ning must be too proud or simply disdainful to come and greet her.
“Yes,” Cai Zhu replied, turning to walk out towards Jin Yuan. After about half an hour, Cai Zhu returned, leading a figure clad in crimson who walked in slowly. Su Ying had never closely observed Fu Ning's appearance before; she only knew that she was exceptionally delicate. Now, upon closer inspection, she realized that Fu Ning was indeed beautiful. Her long black hair was styled into an elegant flowing cloud-like updo, with a pair of hairpins swaying gracefully as she walked.
“Madam sent a maid to summon me early this morning; what is it about?” Fu Ning said reluctantly, slowly raising her head. In her gaze, Su Ying caught a glimpse of disdain and unwillingness.
Su Ying found it amusing; disdain? Unwillingness? What grounds did she have for such feelings?
“Kneel,” Su Ying said coldly, her eyes sweeping over Fu Ning's still haughty demeanor. Fu Ning merely blinked in surprise, showing no intention of heeding her words.
“Don’t think that just because the General favors you, you can look down on me. Even if I do not have the General’s affection, I am still a princess of Kingdom Chen. In this Kingdom Chen, making you disappear is as easy as pie; even the General would not be able to stop it.”
As soon as Su Ying finished speaking, there was a dull thud as Fu Ning collapsed to the ground, her frail shoulders trembling slightly—likely out of fear.
“Madam, Fu Ning was thoughtless and has offended you. She will remember her manners from now on and will greet you every day,” Fu Ning's originally soft voice now carried a hint of sobbing.
“In that case, you may kneel for a while longer today,” Su Ying said as she stood up, casting a calm glance at the trembling Fu Ning on the floor. She then turned to accept the robe that Cai Zhu handed her and draped it over her shoulders before striding towards the garden.
During dinner, Lou Ye Yang stormed into Jin Yuan in a fit of rage. Without waiting for Su Ying to speak, he began scolding her furiously: “Do you know that A Ning has been kneeling in your room all day? She can’t even stand up now and is lying in bed crying out in pain!”
"I certainly know that it was she who first broke the rules, so she naturally deserves to be punished." Su Ying felt displeased by his words and coldly replied, refusing to back down.
"How can you be so cruel? If I had known this would happen, I would never have agreed to marry you," Lou Ye Yang glared at her, his eyes bloodshot with anger.
"You couldn't refuse the Emperor's wishes. If you had been unwilling to marry me, it would have meant death for Fu Ning." Su Ying let out a cold laugh, slightly tilting her head as she deliberately cast a provocative glance at his face.
"Do you think I wouldn't dare to divorce you?" Lou Ye Yang suddenly reached out, gripping Su Ying's wrist tightly while his other hand harshly held her delicate chin, the pressure so intense it felt like he could crush her.
"If you dare to divorce me, don't blame me for dragging Fu Ning down with me. If I am humiliated, her suffering will be a hundred times worse!" Su Ying glared at the furious face before her, gritting her teeth as she spat out those harsh words.
"You!" Lou Ye Yang shot her a glare in return before releasing her and saying nothing more. He turned away, sweeping his sleeves as he strode out of Jin Yuan under the moonlight.
Su Ying's body went limp as she collapsed onto the ground, tears streaming down her cheeks and falling onto her hands, each drop striking her heart like a painful blow.
"Lou Ye Yang, you deceitful scoundrel! You heartless man!" Su Ying cried uncontrollably, clenching her fists so tightly that her fingertips dug into her palms, but it was nothing compared to the agony in her chest.
"Today, Fu Ning's maid Chun Hua secretly poured castor bean powder into a bowl of Sweet Soup. It seems Fu Ning has such a bad temper that even the servants want to harm her," Cai Zhu said as she handed a cup of tea to Su Ying.
"Where did you see this?" Su Ying jolted at her words and turned to ask urgently.
"I happened to see it when I went to the kitchen to get some mung bean cakes," Cai Zhu replied with some confusion.
Su Ying nodded and was about to rise and leave the room when she saw Fu Ning approaching slowly with her maid by her side.
"Madam, I heard that the General disturbed you last night. I am here on his behalf to offer my apologies," Fu Ning said with a smile, turning to give a knowing glance to the maid behind her. A maid then stepped forward, holding a bowl of Sweet Soup in front of Su Ying.
"This is a nourishing snow frog soup that I personally prepared for you, Madam. I hope you won't find it unworthy."
Fu Ning smiled graciously, but Su Ying sensed that her so-called apology was merely a guise for mocking her.
Glancing down at the steaming bowl of Sweet Soup, Su Ying chuckled softly and replied gently to Fu Ning, "I have never been fond of sweet foods since childhood. You may take this bowl back. I'm feeling a bit tired and will return to my room now."
"Are you afraid that I might have added something to it? Or is it simply that you are narrow-minded?"
Fu Ning's relentless words came from behind, and while Su Ying had initially doubted her intentions, this remark felt like a clumsy attempt to deflect suspicion. She increasingly suspected that there was something amiss with the Sweet Soup—could it truly be the castor beans Cai Zhu mentioned?
"I admit I am narrow-minded and think you might have added something unnecessary. Why don't you drink this bowl of Sweet Soup instead? It would prove whether my suspicions are unfounded or if you truly have a wicked heart and wish to harm me," Su Ying said with a half-smile, watching as Fu Ning's expression shifted to one of silent distress.
"If you don't want to eat it, there's no need for such words. Let's go!" Fu Ning regained her composure and turned to instruct the maid behind her to leave. However, she was suddenly startled by Su Ying's voice calling out, "Wait!" causing her to freeze in place, cold sweat breaking out on her brow.
