Upon entering the inner chamber, they found the Coroner examining Qing Xi's corpse. Due to Yuan Xinruan's involvement, they hadn't had the chance to closely inspect the body at Qixiang Pavilion and had sent it directly to Yizhuang.
Seeing the Coroner at work, Chen Wensi hurriedly asked, "What’s the verdict? Any findings?" His voice was filled with urgency and anticipation as he stepped closer to the Coroner, his gaze fixed on the body, missing no detail.
The Coroner shook his head, a hint of helplessness crossing his face. "There are no other obvious injuries on the surface of the body. The pupils are dilated, and due to strangulation, the tongue is pressed against the teeth. In my humble opinion, it is undoubtedly a case of strangulation." His voice was low and hoarse, filled with professionalism and rigor as he pointed out the wounds on the body, explaining them in detail to Chen Wensi and Liu Zimu.
Unwilling to accept this conclusion, Liu Zimu circled around the corpse, a look of confusion and frustration in his eyes. "Is there really nothing else suspicious? For instance, anything unusual under her nails?" He crouched down to examine the corpse's fingernails closely, filled with hope of finding some clue that could clear Yuan Xinruan's name.
"There’s nothing; this young lady has her nails neatly trimmed..." The Coroner replied, his eyes reflecting a mix of resignation and certainty.
He shook his head slightly, as if to tell Liu Zimu not to struggle in vain; this case appeared quite challenging.
"Don’t courtesans usually enjoy applying rouge or flower juice?" Liu Zimu moved aside to look at the lifeless hands. Indeed, all ten fingers were neatly trimmed and showed no signs of any application. He frowned, confusion and disbelief swirling in his mind; something felt off, but he couldn't pinpoint why.
"Indeed..." Chen Wensi shifted his focus, his gaze landing on the first button of Qing Xi's collar.
That button was slightly undone, revealing a vivid red Cinnabar Spot right at her collarbone. Chen Wensi's eyes suddenly sharpened as if he had discovered an important clue.
"Cinnabar Spot?" He turned to Liu Zimu with newfound interest, his eyes glimmering with an unusual light.
Liu Zimu thought he was mocking him about his own mole and retorted angrily, "Chen Laotou, if you dare bring that up again, don’t blame me for turning hostile!" His face flushed red as he clenched his fists, struggling to contain his anger while his gaze bore a warning and threat.
Chen Wensi chuckled softly and shook his head, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.
He asked the Coroner, who was standing behind Liu Zimu, "Who unfastened this clasp?" Chen Wensi's voice was low and serious, his gaze fixed intently on the Coroner, waiting for a response.
The Coroner was taken aback, a look of confusion crossing his face. "It was like this when the body arrived! The cause of death was very obvious, and I hadn’t even had time to undress it for a thorough examination..."
There was a hint of helplessness and innocence in the Coroner's voice as he slightly spread his hands, seemingly indicating that he had no idea how this had happened.
"Is that so?" Chen Wensi lowered his voice, a meaningful smile curling at the corners of his mouth.
A spark of intelligence flickered in his eyes, suggesting that he had already formed a preliminary deduction in his mind. However, he did not rush to voice it; instead, he stood quietly, contemplating his next move.
"What's wrong? Is there an issue with this mole?" Liu Zimu leaned in curiously to examine it for a moment before suddenly becoming unusually excited. "Doesn’t the Qingxi Girl have this mole? Could it be that this isn’t the Qingxi Girl at all?"
Liu Zimu's eyes were filled with surprise and anticipation; he seemed to see hope for clearing Yuan Xinruan's name, and the gloom in his heart gradually dissipated.
But then, without warning, Chen Wensi dashed out of Yizhuang like a whirlwind, moving swiftly and nimbly, leaving Liu Zimu and the Coroner staring at each other in bewilderment.
They watched Chen Wensi's retreating figure, their eyes filled with confusion and surprise, unsure why he had suddenly rushed away. A vague sense lingered in their minds that this case was about to take an unexpected turn.
