Nina let out a cold laugh and said, "Is this how you study at home? No matter how things are at Yun Cheng University in your country, it lacks a systematic mathematics research group. Compared to Cambridge, this place is just child's play. I'm speaking the objective truth; don't you realize that?"
Wu Rong remained silent this time.
Rao Jie felt her heart tighten as she listened from inside.
Nina continued, "Now he doesn't even work at Cambridge anymore. Perhaps he can't bear to face us or the professors. So he's gone to work at another university. Because of you, he has nearly severed ties with his own mentor. Regardless of the circumstances, you should go back and see him; he is gravely ill and may not have much time left. Rao Jie didn't know how Wu Rong felt listening to this, but if it were her, she might be swayed.
Although she completely didn't want Wu Rong to leave, she wasn't sure if he would waver.
Once Rao Jie was ready, she stepped out of the kitchen.
Seeing her, Nina said, "Rao Jie, right? Do you know about Wu Rong's achievements in Foreign Country?"
Rao Jie was taken aback and turned to look at Wu Rong.
Wu Rong frowned and asked, "Why bring this up?"
But Nina pressed on aggressively, "I'm just curious about how much your little girlfriend knows about you. Does she know what research results earned you the first heavyweight award from the Mathematics Community? Does she know when you became a PhD, when you became a teaching assistant, and when you became an associate professor? Does she know how many records you've broken in the Mathematics Community? Does she understand what you're researching and what kind of help it can bring to other disciplines? What progress it can bring to human society? Mathematics is the foundation for studying all other disciplines; it's the most beautiful tool. Does she know how many possibilities lie ahead for you? Are you really going to waste your talent here?"
Wu Rong suddenly stood up and said to Nina, "Are you out of your mind? If you keep talking to Rao Jie like that, don’t blame me for being rude. She doesn’t know because I haven’t told her, but that doesn’t matter because those things have no significance for our relationship. They are my own affairs; please don’t attribute all the negativity to me and her. Your judgment is utterly illogical."
Nina's expression shifted slightly as she wanted to argue further, but Wu Rong turned to the pale-faced Rao Jie and said, "It's time to take you to work; let’s go."
Rao Jie hesitated and nodded. She wanted to say something in her defense but ultimately didn’t say anything at all.
Because some of what Nina said was true; she really didn’t understand Wu Rong—she only knew he was an impressive mathematician.
Rao Jie was absent-minded as she was taken to work. Before getting out of the car, Wu Rong gently kissed her and said, "Don’t take it to heart. Just pretend you didn’t hear her when she talks in the future, and I’ll help you."
Rao Jie felt a lot more at ease and smiled at Wu Rong before getting out of the car.
However, throughout that day at work, Rao Jie couldn’t concentrate. She kept thinking about what they might discuss at home, what they might do together, whether they would talk about her in her absence, or if Wu Rong would eventually feel that Nina was right—that perhaps she wasn’t as captivating to him as she thought.
When Wu Rong came to pick her up that evening, it was evident that he drove faster than usual; there was an urgency in his desire to return home.
