Zhou Yan and Jinyi's mission ended in failure once again, but unexpectedly, a month later, Feng Jinyan came knocking on their door.
She was shot twice, her body battered and bruised, and with her last ounce of strength, she crawled to Jinyi's apartment door, clutching a secret document tightly in her hand.
Jinyi trembled as he opened the document that Feng Jinyan had risked her life to obtain. His face turned pale as he realized it was a report on a new type of weapon developed by Nakano Ichiro, a bomb expert from the Japanese Army, along with plans for a gas bomb. They intended to blow up the Water Plant and poison the entire city’s population—truly a heartless and malicious scheme!
It turned out that Jinyi had misunderstood Feng Jinyan; she was not a traitor working for the Japanese Army, nor was she seeking personal gain at the expense of her country. Everything she did was to acquire this secret intelligence and thwart the Japanese Army's sinister plans.
With tears blurring his vision, Jinyi closed the document, only for a note to flutter out. It bore the names of the latest batch of Communist Party Members.
To Jinyi's astonishment, Zhou Yan's name was among them.
At that moment, all the mysteries were suddenly clear. The intelligence they had retrieved from Zhao Wanye had indeed been switched by Zhou Yan and handed over to the Communists.
It was evident that this secret list was something Feng Jinyan had specially investigated to reveal the truth to her. Feng Jinyan wanted Jinyi to understand Zhou Yan's true identity so that she would not be kept in the dark and manipulated.
Realizing this, Jinyi squeezed her eyes shut tightly, tears spilling over. Then, she discreetly tucked the document into her sleeve to prevent Zhou Yan's identity from being exposed.
The next day, Zhou Yan learned of Feng Jinyan's death while out on business. Anxious and distressed, he rushed straight to Jinyi ’s home. He knew that she must be feeling immense guilt; he needed to be by her side to comfort her.
In the living room of the apartment, Zhou Yan finally saw the haggard and emaciated Jinyi. He thought she was still grieving for Feng Jinyan and burdened with guilt. Gently placing his hands on her shoulders, he softly reassured her, “ Jinyi, you need to let it go…”
“Why did you lie to me?!” To his surprise, Jinyi coldly pulled away from him, her eyes ablaze with anger. Zhou Yan stood frozen in place, at a loss for words.
"What did you say?" Zhou Yan asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"That piece of intelligence was clearly your mistake. You are a Communist Party Member, right?" Jinyi scoffed, feeling a chill in her heart due to his current concealment.
"No, who told you that?" Zhou Yan's expression shifted slightly, and a hint of panic flashed in his eyes.
He hadn't expected Jinyi to ask such a question out of the blue. At that moment, he still clenched his teeth, unwilling to admit the truth.
"Stop lying to me. Stop using me. It doesn't matter who you really are to me. Right now, with the country in peril, the most important thing is to kill Japanese Soldiers. Whether it's the Nationalists or the Communists has nothing to do with me. I just want to kill Japanese Soldiers and avenge my parents!" Jinyi shook her head, her voice choked with emotion as she felt heartbroken over his deception.
She had thought that he would risk his life to protect her and truly cared for her, but she never expected he would also use her.
" Jinyi, let me explain. I never used you; I was sincere! I was just afraid that knowing the truth would make you doubt me!" Zhou Yan desperately reached for Jinyi's hand, but she turned away from him.
He had never imagined that his concealment would make her so angry; he was simply terrified of losing her and thus denied everything.
"Is that so? Zhou Yan, I can't trust you now. You make me feel strange and scared!" Jinyi covered her ears with her hands and turned her head away, unwilling to hear any more of his explanations.
" Jinyi..." Zhou Yan felt a surge of urgency in his heart. He suddenly grabbed her wrist from behind and pulled her into his embrace.
"Let go of me, you..." Jinyi began to scold him, but Zhou Yan didn't give her a chance. He leaned down abruptly and kissed her lips.
The kiss was passionate and deep, both domineering and gentle. Jinyi struggled for a moment but found herself unable to escape his hold.
Gradually, she relaxed, no longer resisting.
"I didn't mean to deceive you. Whether you believe it or not, regardless of whether I am a Communist Party Member or a KMT Member, my heart has always belonged to you. These months of life and death together—can that not prove my sincerity?" Zhou Yan held her tightly, speaking softly yet firmly in her ear.
Jinyi gazed into his sincere and passionate eyes, listening to his unwavering words, and her doubts vanished without a trace.
No matter what his identity was, he loved her, didn't he?
Since the concealment stemmed from the fear of losing her, why should she care so much?
Whether he was a Communist Party Member or a KMT Member, he was still her Zhou Yan—the Zhou Yan who had stood by her through life and death, the Zhou Yan who shared her pain, and the Zhou Yan who would accompany her for a lifetime.
