Su Lingyu's expression hardened. "If you don't want to continue our collaboration, you can just say so. I don't wish to discuss anything else."
She had built a high wall between herself and Yun Shaoyan, refusing to get close or allow him to cross over.
"Of course we should collaborate." Yun Shaoyan released his grip and said with a playful tone. Given Su Lingyu's peculiar temperament, if he lost this one opportunity to approach her, he might never get another chance.
"Is Old Lady Wen feeling better?"
"Thank you for your concern."
Su Lingyu kept her head down, responding casually.
"I really can't understand why you're so devoted to the Wen family."
"And I don't understand why you keep pestering me. Don't forget, I am Madam Wen now."
She set down the ledger in her hands and glanced at Yun Shaoyan, her gaze drifting past him to the window where Mo Qing stood, his expression enigmatic.
Su Lingyu tightened her grip on the pen, bit her lip, and said to Yun Shaoyan, "That's all for today. You can discuss the details with Mo Qing."
Having said that in a flat tone, Su Lingyu stood up and walked past him.
"Hey, I told you I wouldn't give up." He laughed nonchalantly, but his eyes were serious.
Her heart raced uneasily as Su Lingyu pulled her hand away from his and hurried out.
Returning to the Wen family in a state of agitation, Su Lingyu had just reached Old Madam's door when she heard Ruan Xiaolian's sharp voice from inside.
"Auntie, you have no idea. That Su Lingyu is nothing but a promiscuous woman. How long has it been since our cousin died? She's already flirting around! Officially she's dealing with Shanghang's business, but in reality, she's out there seducing men..."
"I saw it with my own eyes; that man even came to our house..."
Ruan Xiaolian rattled on without hearing a single response from Old Madam. Su Lingyu peered through the window and saw Old Madam leaning against the bed railing, her eyes gently closed, revealing no emotion whatsoever.
She pushed the door open, causing Ruan Xiaolian to immediately fall silent. Turning around with a glare, she raised her chin haughtily. "I didn't lie at all! Auntie, if you don't believe me, you can ask her!"
Old Madam slowly spoke up. "Xiaolian, you can leave now."
Ruan Xiaolian looked at Su Lingyu with a smug expression and made a face at her before closing the door.
Su Lingyu gently laid her hand on the elderly woman's shoulder and said softly, "Mother, you should rest now."
"Don't you want to tell me what Xiao Lian mentioned?" The elderly woman looked at her, her eyes devoid of reproach, only filled with a heavy sigh. "I don't mind if you remarry; after all, you and Jing'er are not truly husband and wife. We cannot hold you back... I know you stayed with the Wen Family for my sake..."
"Mother, you're overthinking it." Su Lingyu gently interrupted her, soothingly saying, "Just rest well; you don't need to worry about my matters."
She sighed slightly and said firmly, "I swear I will not leave the Wen Family, nor will I remarry."
As for that illusory love, she would keep her distance and not touch it.
Yun Shaoyan was likely just a fleeting curiosity.
She didn't need to take it seriously: "Mother, I will stay by your side in place of Wen Jing."
Su Lingyu truly stopped appearing in public. She handed over all cooperative matters to Mo Qing and then seemed to vanish from the world.
Yun Shaoyan couldn't sleep at night. After several days without seeing Su Lingyu, he finally realized how deeply she had affected him. Once he sorted through his chaotic thoughts, he began to worry again. That stubborn Su Lingyu avoided him like the plague; at present, he had no chance whatsoever.
The night grew deep, and he tossed and turned in bed, his thoughts lingering on Su Lingyu.
Ultimately unable to suppress his feelings any longer, he got up and left his house, unknowingly arriving at the back door of the Wen Family.
From a distance, he saw a light slowly approaching. Under the flickering glow, Su Lingyu's fair face came into view. She gently closed the back door and quietly walked outside.
Yun Shaoyan followed her with suspicion in his heart as the surrounding scenery grew increasingly dilapidated.
Su Lingyu stopped in front of a rundown thatched cottage, raised her hand to push open the door, and cautiously glanced around.
The closed door blocked Yun Shaoyan's view, causing his heart to race as an uneasy feeling intensified within him.
Suddenly, a terrified scream from inside the door pierced through: "Get away!"
"It won't help if you scream; no one will come to save you now!" A man's shrill voice echoed from within, laced with lewdness. "This is all your doing. Why did you run out when you saw that note? Isn’t it just your own fault?"
"I'm not..."
The terrified voice abruptly ceased, interrupted by a resounding slap.
"You didn't know, did you? I've wanted to have you for a long time... Today, the heavens finally..."
Before Mo Qing could finish his sentence, the door was kicked open with a loud bang.
Yun Shaoyan saw Su Lingyu lying helplessly on the ground, her eyes filled with a vulnerability he had never seen before, piercing his heart deeply.
Without a second thought, he rushed in and landed a fierce punch to Mo Qing's abdomen. "You bastard!"
He couldn't bear to imagine what kind of misfortune Su Lingyu would have faced if he hadn't come. The overwhelming fear compelled him to vent his emotions.
After a brutal beating, Mo Qing seized an opportunity and fled in disarray. Only then did Yun Shaoyan calm down, turning his attention to the pitiful Su Lingyu.
He stepped forward and gently pulled her trembling form into his embrace, removing his coat and carefully draping it over her shoulders.
Yun Shaoyan tenderly caressed her face, unable to restrain himself from scolding her. "Have you lost your mind? What are you doing out here so late?"
"I..." Su Lingyu choked back her tears, suppressing the fear within her as she took out a note. "I got this..."
It was a note written in Yun Shaoyan's handwriting, asking her to meet.
