In Meiyuan Town, the Yun Family had only recently moved in, yet they had already made a name for themselves in the marketplace and purchased a grand residence. However, within the entire household, only Yun Shaoyan remained.
Su Lingyu, dressed in white, sat on a stool with a sorrowful expression, lost in thought.
News had arrived yesterday that Old Lady Wen had died from anger, filling her heart with guilt and deepening her sense of indebtedness to the Wen Family.
The servants of the Yun Family whispered among themselves, pointing in her direction and exchanging unflattering remarks. While they feigned respect towards her, they secretly looked down upon her for having an affair and ultimately becoming their master's woman.
When Yun Shaoyan returned from outside, he spotted her in a daze from afar. He approached slowly, wrapping his arms around her from behind and holding her tightly. Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, "What’s wrong? What are you thinking about?"
Su Lingyu opened her mouth slightly and said, "My mother has died."
Yun Shaoyan froze momentarily, his gaze turning fierce as he scanned the surroundings. He had forbidden anyone from mentioning this matter at home; how could she have found out?
He gently reassured her, "It's not your fault. I heard it was because of Ruan Xiaolian..." He had sent someone to investigate and arranged for an informant within the Wen Family to notify him. The last person seen with the old lady was Ruan Xiaolian.
Su Lingyu shook her head, clutching his clothing as she buried her face in his embrace.
The intimacy and dependence she displayed for the first time stirred something soft within Yun Shaoyan's heart.
"This jade pendant is quite special," Su Lingyu remarked absentmindedly as her fingers brushed against the pendant, playing with it gently.
"This is my family's heirloom; I never part with it," Yun Shaoyan replied without suspicion, speaking candidly.
"Is that so?" Su Lingyu pondered inwardly why this family heirloom he never left behind would be found on the deceased Wen Jing.
She remembered that unique pattern clearly; it had once been imprinted on Wen Jing's clothing. She had previously overlooked it, thinking it was just an accident, but now, seeing the jade pendant on Yun Shaoyan, she couldn't help but feel suspicious.
After Yun Shaoyan arrived in Meiyuan Town, the Yun Family began to prosper, and all of this happened right after Wen Jing's incident.
"If you want it, I can give it to you," Yun Shaoyan said as he reached to remove the jade pendant.
Su Lingyu hurriedly stopped him. "No need, I'm just curious."
She withdrew her hand and asked, "What were you doing before you came here?"
"Nothing much, just idling around," Yun Shaoyan replied. "My family has businesses elsewhere, but I wasn't interested. Eventually, I thought about coming to Meiyuan Town. Here, there are things I have longed for..." As he spoke, his gentle gaze locked onto Su Lingyu's face.
What he wanted? Was it Wen Family's Wealth? Was he approaching her for the sake of Wen Family's Wealth?
"Lingyu," Yun Shaoyan lowered his head slightly and whispered softly, "I want to kiss you."
Su Lingyu did not resist or struggle; she was lost in the tenderness he created. Her heart felt a bit confused, and for a moment, she almost couldn't recognize herself.
Faced with Yun Shaoyan's deep affection, she knew her heart had wavered. However, how could she forget that if it weren't for him, she wouldn't have suffered through these painful days?
The car was waiting at the door as the servants loaded their luggage. Yun Shaoyan turned back to look at Su Lingyu and asked with concern, "What's wrong?"
"I want to go somewhere," Su Lingyu said.
They had decided to head to Nanyang for development, a proposal made by Yun Shaoyan.
He understood well that in Meiyuan Town, Su Lingyu always carried a burden in her heart, a burden named Wen Jing. She would not find happiness here. Therefore, he wanted to take her away from this place of sorrow.
Su Lingyu understood his intentions and did not refuse.
"Alright, I will go with you."
In the small grove ten miles outside the town, everything had changed since the last time they visited.
Su Lingyu stood beneath a large tree, her fingers gently tracing the mottled trunk.
The last time she was here, she had seen Wen Jing's lifeless body, bloodied and cold, stiff in death.
