Chen Zhaonian hugged me from behind and asked, "Do you like it here?"
I sniffled and replied, "It's okay."
In truth, I had lost interest in the sea; I just didn't want to dampen his spirits.
"This is where I bought after graduation," he said. "I come here a few times every year, but in the crowd, I can no longer see you."
I was taken aback, unsure why he suddenly brought this up.
He sighed, "I really don't know what you were thinking, being so cruel and making me search for so many years."
I lowered my eyes, not knowing what to say.
He turned my shoulders to face him and looked into my eyes. "Fortunately, I found you."
I avoided his gaze, unsure of how to respond.
"Don't you want to ask how I found you?" he inquired.
I shook my head, feeling it unnecessary.
He kissed my forehead gently and said, "Silly."
I pushed him away and walked out onto the balcony.
He turned on some music, stepped onto the balcony, took off his jacket and casually draped it over a chair, then reached out his hand to me.
"Come," he said.
I looked at him, confused.
"Dance with me," he urged.
I laughed, "I can't."
He took my hand firmly. "I'll teach you."
We embraced on the balcony as he hummed a tune, and I followed his lead in dancing.
"This is nice," he said. "No matter how you change, as long as you're by my side, I feel happy."
I looked into his eyes, speechless.
"Sometimes I feel grateful, grateful that you have become like this now," he said.
"If you were still the person you were seven years ago, I might never forgive myself."
I lowered my gaze, unsure of what to say.
He looked at me, his eyes intense: " Huiyan, promise me you won't leave me again, okay?"
I stared at him in a daze, uncertain whether to agree.
" Huiyan..." He held my hand, gently stroking it.
I pulled my hand back and turned away from him.
"I need time," I said.
He embraced me from behind: "I'll give you time."
I closed my eyes, feeling a whirlwind of emotions inside.
So, Chen Zhaonian and I settled into the apartment together.
It was my birthday that day; he turned off the lights and lit the candles.
In the flickering candlelight, he asked me, "Do you want to make a wish?"
I closed my eyes and silently prayed: I hope he forgets me.
When I opened my eyes, I saw the hint of sadness in his gaze.
"What did you wish for?" he asked.
"Wishes lose their magic when spoken," I replied.
He sighed: "Just say it; I want to hear."
I looked at him, unsure of what wish to concoct.
He smiled: "Just say anything; it doesn't have to be serious."
A thought struck me: "I wish for us to live a long life together."
He looked at me and shook his head: "Rather than living a long life..."
"I hope we can be together forever."
When An Huaishan barged in with two men, I was sitting on the sofa in the living room, admiring the sports car that Chen Zhaonian had bought for me.
They smashed things for a long time while I just sat there, watching as if the broken items had nothing to do with me. After all, someone else would come to fix the damage; it wasn't my responsibility.
An Huaishan's gaze locked onto me. She walked over in her high heels, the sound echoing sharply against the floor, and slapped me hard across the face!
The sting on my cheek was intense, and I could taste blood in my mouth. I looked up at her, and she glared back at me with fury.
"You little slut!" she spat.
"Do you dare hit me?" I laughed, a mocking smile curving my lips.
She paused for a moment, perhaps startled by my expression.
"I'm hitting you," she declared defiantly.
I raised my hand and slapped her back with equal force.
