I put all my strength into that slap, leaving my palm numb and my ears ringing.
She staggered back, nearly falling over, but fortunately someone was there to catch her.
Covering her face, she glared at me as if she wanted to devour me.
"How dare you hit me?" she murmured, "You actually dared to hit me..."
"And what if I did?" I laughed, "What are you even worth?"
She lunged at me to strike back, but was stopped by Chen Zhaonian.
"Get away!" she shouted, "I want to kill this little bitch!"
Chen Zhaonian grabbed her arm and pushed her aside.
"Are you done making a scene?" he asked coldly.
An Huaishan froze for a moment before bursting into tears. "You actually hit me... Chen Zhaonian, you actually hit me..."
Chen Zhaonian ignored her and walked straight up to me, crouching down to look at me.
"Are you hurt?" he asked.
I touched my cheek and shook my head.
He reached out and pulled me into his embrace.
"I'm divorcing her," he said.
I was taken aback, unsure of what he meant.
An Huaishan was also stunned, staring at Chen Zhaonian in disbelief. "What did you say?"
"I'm divorcing her," Chen Zhaonian repeated.
"Are you crazy?" An Huaishan yelled, "Have you forgotten our agreement?"
"I haven't forgotten," Chen Zhaonian replied, "I want a divorce."
"You..." An Huaishan glared at him, "You..."
Chen Zhaonian ignored her again, picked me up, and strode out of the villa.
He took me to a hotel and booked a room.
“Why a hotel?” I asked him.
“So she won't be able to find us,” he replied.
I laughed, “Aren't you afraid she'll come here and cause a scene?”
He chuckled, “What do I have to be afraid of? I'm not afraid of anything.”
I lowered my eyes, unsure of what to say.
He gently touched my cheek, “Does it still hurt?”
I shook my head and said, “It doesn't hurt anymore.”
Even though I said that, my body was still trembling.
After all, it had been a long time since I had been hit.
He sighed and held me close.
“ Huiyan, I want to marry you,” he suddenly said.
I was taken aback and looked up at him.
“I want to marry you,” he repeated.
“You…” I hesitated for a moment, “Have you thought this through?”
He nodded, “I've thought it through.”
“Are you sure about this?” I asked again.
He smiled, “I've thought about it very clearly.”
He looked at me with deep eyes.
“Are you really sure?” I asked once more.
He nodded again, “I’m really sure.”
“Chen Zhaonian…” I called his name, unsure of what to say next.
He sighed, “ Huiyan, do you know? I regret it.”
I looked at him, confused about what he meant.
"It was my father who didn't allow us to be together back then," he said. "I’m sorry for what I did; I hurt you..."
"Stop talking," I replied.
" Huiyan..." He took my hand, "I really regret it..."
I didn’t say anything; I simply reached out and hugged his neck. His lips were cold, yet they carried a hint of warmth. His breath was rapid, but I felt a sense of peace.
In that moment, I knew that he and I were one.
Two months later, Chen Zhaonian and An Huaishan officially divorced.
As soon as Chen Zhaonian stepped out of the courthouse, he hurried to my place. However, I was no longer there.
A few months later, I saw An Huaishan at a restaurant in the neighboring city. She wore a dark green suit and had meticulously applied makeup, looking as competent as ever.
She pushed a check across the table towards me.
"This is for you," she said.
I picked up the check and glanced at it.
"He paid quite a price to divorce you," she remarked.
I set the check down without responding.
"I truly envy you," she continued. "After all these years, he still loves you."
I remained silent.
She sighed, "I hope you treat him well."
I picked up the check and stood up.
"I will treat him well," I said. "You don’t need to worry about that."
