"What's this about brother-in-law? An engagement isn't a marriage," Sun Yao interrupted.
Zheng Mengni gently said in an innocent voice, "Right, brother? Why don't you take us?"
With such a win-win suggestion paired with her soft and delicate tone, no one could refuse her.
Zheng Zeqi nodded, as if agreeing.
As they were about to leave, Zheng Mengni touched up her lipstick and bent down to pat Juan Juan's head. "Bye-bye! I'll come play with you again this weekend."
Mi Gao let out a couple of whines nearby.
She smiled helplessly, placing her other hand on Mi Gao's head, while Mi Gao continued to wag its tail in discontent.
Zheng Zeqi passed by with a calm expression. He gently reminded her, "It's getting late."
"Okay," she replied.
Zheng Mengni finally ruffled the heads of the two little ones, smiling affectionately. "Alright, I don't want to leave you either, but the school has rules against keeping pets."
"Xiao Ni."
Zheng Zeqi opened the door and turned to look at Zheng Mengni, urging her softly once more.
"I'm coming, brother."
Zheng Mengni grabbed her bag and quickly followed him, the sound of her high heels clicking on the marble floor echoing behind her.
Once outside the villa, Zheng Zeqi's car had already been brought out by the driver. The black luxury vehicle sat quietly at the entrance, understated yet elegant.
"Get in first," Zheng Zeqi said.
"But brother, Wei Jingxi isn't here yet."
"He’s always late. Are you going to wait for him?" Zheng Zeqi paused at her words, his usually gentle tone carrying a hint of chill.
"Then let's wait for him in the car for a bit."
Any subtle change in emotion never escaped Zheng Mengni's notice. She hurriedly caught up with him and leaned against his side, her soft hair brushing against his arm and carrying a faint scent from the breeze.
She provided everyone with an easy way out and took the initiative to lead Zheng Zeqi toward the car.
Just a few steps away, the roar of the engine grew louder, piercing the air as a platinum-plated convertible sports car sped toward them. As it approached the gate, it suddenly drifted in a half-circle and came to a smooth stop in front of the villa.
The engine turned off, and the driver lifted his chin slightly, locking eyes with Zheng Mengni.
"Get in."
Zheng Mengni hesitated. "Why did you drive a two-seater?"
At her words, Wei Jingxi pushed his sunglasses up, finally noticing Zheng Zeqi sitting beside her.
"Hello, Brother."
He opened the car door and greeted Zheng Zeqi with an easy smile, effortlessly displaying a standard fake grin.
Zheng Zeqi nodded while quietly sizing up Wei Jingxi from head to toe. He wore a white tank top with cutouts, fitted black pleated jeans, and retro athletic sneakers. Around his neck were two zirconia chains layered together, and he had two pairs of simple hoops and studs in his ears. His hair was styled back with wax, exposing his forehead.
This unexpected outfit was quite rare; it was overly flashy.
Upon closer inspection, there was a scent in the air that didn’t belong to Xiao Ni. Zheng Zeqi's expression remained calm as his gaze shifted to Zheng Mengni.
Wei Jingxi raised an eyebrow. "I didn’t know your brother was taking you today. I only prepared breakfast for you."
"We’ve already eaten," Zheng Zeqi replied softly.
Zheng Mengni suggested, "Why don’t you ride with us?"
"I still need to make a trip to school later; it’s inconvenient to leave the car at your place," Wei Jingxi quickly declined.
"Xiao Ni, we’re going to be late."
On the other side, Zheng Zeqi's dark eyes seemed to have been dipped in ice water—deep and somber.
Zheng Mengni felt a pang of anxiety and hesitated. She steeled herself. "Brother, let me talk to Wei Jingxi for a moment. You go wait in the car; I’ll be right there."
Zheng Zeqi lowered his gaze to her pale cheeks. After a moment, he murmured an acknowledgment and turned away.
Leaning against the car door, Wei Jingxi raised an eyebrow slightly, his lips curling into a sarcastic arc.
"Have you forgotten our agreement so soon?"
I don't have it.
Let me guess, your brother must have offered to take you to school after me, right? Otherwise, why didn't you mention it when I texted you yesterday? I can understand family members cutting in line, but Zheng Mengni, don't forget...
