Three days later, I arrived at the estate as planned.
"I am here to deliver autumn clothing for Consort Four," I said to the guard.
Gu Yao had already arranged my identity for me. The guard scrutinized me for a moment before allowing me entry.
After passing through several courtyards, I finally reached a quiet chamber.
Consort Four was half-kneeling on the ground, speaking to someone inside: "The medicine is ready; you can rest assured..."
"Not enough."
A cold voice came from within.
"I want him to suffer more than death."
"He betrayed me."
The voice was filled with resentment.
"He should pay the price."
"Mother..."
Luo Ruyan hesitated, her words trailing off.
A jolt of shock ran through me. Luo Ruyan's biological mother was already... Wait! A terrifying thought emerged. Could it be that the one who harmed my entire family back then was her?
"Who is outside?" The voice suddenly rang out.
My heart raced, and I turned to flee.
"Stop!" Luo Ruyan shouted sharply.
A wave of fragrance hit me, and my vision went dark as I collapsed.
---
When I awoke, I found myself bound to a chair.
"You're awake?" Luo Ruyan stood before me.
" Lady Su," I forced down my rising panic, "I do not understand what the lady is saying."
"What are you pretending for?" she sneered.
"Prince Pingyang's sister, the one who faked her death to escape, Su Yuru."
I remained silent.
"Do you really think Hamu loves you?" she mocked. "He's just using you."
"Same goes for you," I replied.
A change flickered across Luo Ruyan's face. "What do you mean?"
"Sixteen years ago, you forced him to write the Poison Formula. Now, you're forcing him to do your bidding."
I looked at Luo Ruyan. "This is the rope with which you control your brother, isn't it?"
Slap!
A sharp sting exploded on my cheek.
"You wretched girl!" she hissed through clenched teeth. "What do you know?"
"I know plenty," I said, licking the blood from the corner of my mouth. "For instance... you love him."
Her pupils constricted.
"But he only sees you as a sister. That makes you hate him, yet feel helpless."
"Shut up!"
"So you torment him like this, allowing him neither peace nor death."
"I said shut your mouth!"
She swung her hand again, but this time it was intercepted.
"That's enough."
Xiao Yuchen appeared at the door, his presence commanding.
"Hamu..." Luo Ruyan's expression changed dramatically.
"Let her go." His voice was icy.
"It's impossible!" she screamed hysterically.
"You are mine! You can only be mine!"
" Luo Ruyan," he said, enunciating each word clearly.
"You've gone mad!"
"Yes, I've gone mad!" she sneered.
"I've been crazy for you all these years, and yet you betray me for that worthless person!"
"I did not betray you," he replied.
"Because I have never belonged to you."
"You..."
"Let her go," he repeated.
"Otherwise, don't blame me for disregarding our sibling bond."
Luo Ruyan's face turned pale.
"Are you really going to turn against me for her?"
"You were the one who turned against me first," he said calmly.
"When you poisoned her entire family, you sealed this day."
"That was Mother's idea!"
"But you executed it," he said, his gaze icy.
"Now, it's time to pay the price."
"Fine."
She suddenly laughed.
"Then you should pay the price too!"
Before her words could fade, a silver needle pierced the back of my neck.
The deadly poison instantly invaded my organs.
"A Rou!" Xiao Yuchen's expression changed drastically.
"This is an improved version of the Poison Formula from sixteen years ago," Luo Ruyan declared triumphantly.
"Even you can't cure it."
I felt my blood burning throughout my body.
It hurt so much...
"Give me the Antidote!" he shouted, gripping her by the throat.
"There is no Antidote," she laughed maniacally.
"This time, I want you to watch her die!"
I curled up on the ground, too pained to speak.
Xiao Yuchen picked me up, saying, "Hang in there..."
"It's too late," Luo Ruyan said.
"The poison has already taken hold."
He looked at my suffering form, a flicker of struggle crossing his eyes.
Then, he made an astonishing decision.
"A Rou," he whispered, and I weakly nodded.
In the next moment, he bit his finger, letting his blood drip into my mouth.
"You've lost your mind!" Luo Ruyan screamed.
"Your blood will kill her!"
But I could no longer afford to think about that.
A warm current flowed down my throat into my very core.
The burning sensation in my blood gradually faded away.
In its place was a strange feeling, as if something was awakening within me.
Luo Ruyan stared intently at Xiao Yuchen.
"You know the consequences."
Since drinking Xiao Yuchen's blood, I began to feel different.
At night, poisonous creatures would unconsciously draw near me.
When I saw flowers and plants, I could sense whether they were toxic or not.
"This is the power of the Lord's bloodline," Gu Yao explained.
"You have now become a poison controller."
"So the price he paid to save me was to make me bear the same curse?"
"Yes."
She sighed.
"This kind of power will gradually make you feared by the world."
I chuckled lightly, "I don't care about the opinions of others."
"But Lord cares."
Gu Yao looked at me.
"He doesn't want you to endure this kind of pain."
I fell silent.
In the quiet room, Luo Ruyan's mother was still there.
The mastermind behind it all, the culprit from years ago.
"Are you going?" Xiao Yuchen blocked my path.
"I won't feel at ease if I don't go."
"Let me accompany you."
"No need," I shook my head. "Your current identity is too sensitive."
The Ninth Prince's grand plan had already begun; he couldn't act recklessly.
"I'm worried."
"Don't worry," I smiled.
"Your blood isn't given in vain."
He sighed, "Then be careful."
The night was deep and quiet.
I quietly slipped into the still room.
"You're here?" A cold voice echoed.
"I've been waiting for you for a long time."
The candlelight flickered on.
A woman with a veil sat there.
"You are... the Empress?" I recognized her features.
"No," she sneered. "I'm just a dead person."
So that's how it is.
When the Empress fell into the water years ago, it was said that her body was never found.
It turns out she faked her death to escape.
"Why did you kill my entire family?" I asked directly.
"Because your father knew too many secrets," she replied indifferently.
"About the secret of the Former Emperor's death."
A jolt ran through me.
"You thought the Former Emperor died of illness?" she mocked. "It was I who poisoned him, little by little."
"Why?"
"To allow the current Emperor to ascend the throne." Hatred flashed in her eyes. "And to take revenge for his betrayal when he abandoned me!"
"You..."
"But none of that matters now." She suddenly laughed. "What matters is that you walked right into my trap."
The room was suddenly illuminated by an eerie blue flame.
This is bad! It's an ambush!
"You think that with Hamu's blood, you can do whatever you want?" she said. "How naive."
Several figures in black emerged from the shadows.
They held strange incense burners in their hands.
Thin wisps of smoke curled up, carrying a bizarre fragrance.
"This is... incense specifically designed to counteract poison control."
She said triumphantly.
"If Hamu inhales this incense, he will temporarily lose his abilities. Do you think he would come to save you if he knew you were in danger?"
Panic surged within me.
It's a trap!
Luring me in was just a way to deal with Xiao Yuchen!
"You truly are ruthless," I sneered. "No wonder Luo Ruyan ended up like this."
"Likewise," she dismissed my words.
"Aren't you also using Hamu?"
"You are mistaken." I looked her straight in the eye. "I truly love him."
"Love?"
She burst into laughter.
"What true love exists in this world? There is only exploitation!"
"You are wrong." A voice suddenly rang out.
Xiao Yuchen appeared at the door, I didn't even notice when he arrived.
"Just in time," the queen revealed a victorious smile.
"Tonight, let this pair of star-crossed lovers accompany me to hell!"
"Dream on."
I suddenly laughed.
The Queen's expression changed: "What are you laughing at?"
"I'm laughing at your naivety." I flexed my wrist.
"Did you really think I would fall for it?"
Suddenly, the black-clad figures around us clutched their throats and collapsed to the ground.
"What is this...?" The Queen's face turned pale.
"Who do you think you are to play with poison in front of me?" Xiao Yuchen sneered.
"Do you think your petty tricks are worthy of me?"
"Impossible!" she screamed.
"The incense..."
"It's fake," I said.
"Your people were swapped out long ago."
She looked at us in terror: "You... knew all along?"
"Every move you make is under our control," Xiao Yuchen stated.
"No..." She stumbled backward. " Luo Ruyan! Save me!"
There was no response.
"Your dear daughter," I said softly,
"is currently busy dealing with the Ninth Prince."
"What?"
"Who told you to inform her that the poison meant for the Ninth Prince was prepared by Hamu?"
I mocked her.
"We saw through her little schemes long ago."
The Queen's face turned ashen.
"Just surrender," Xiao Yuchen said.
"Dream on!" She suddenly pulled out a porcelain vial.
"If I'm going down, we're all going down!"
The vial shattered on the ground.
A deadly powder instantly filled the air.
I instinctively wanted to use my poison control abilities.
But Xiao Yuchen stepped in front of me first, shielding me with his body.
"Hamu!" I exclaimed in shock.
He braced himself against the deadly poison, his gaze fixed intently on the Queen.
"Do you think... this little poison can kill me?"
Fear flickered across the Queen's face.
"Today, it’s time to settle this." He stepped closer, one deliberate stride at a time.
Just then, a hidden arrow whistled through the air!
"Watch out!" I lunged toward Xiao Yuchen.
A sharp pain shot through me.
The arrow pierced my shoulder.
"A Rou!" His voice was a mix of shock and anger.
"I'm fine..." I managed to say, forcing the words out.
"You wretched woman!" The Queen sneered. "That arrow is laced with deadly poison; even with Hamu's blood, you won't survive!"
Xiao Yuchen held me tightly, panic etched in his eyes like never before.
"Let me see." He reached to examine my wound.
But I could no longer feel the pain.
"Hamu..." I whispered softly.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't speak!" His voice trembled with urgency.
"I'll save you right now."
"It's too late..." I reached up to touch his face. "The poison has already..."
Before I could finish, a surge of blood erupted from my mouth.
This time, even his blood couldn't save me.
"No!" He held me tighter, desperation in his grip.
"You won't die! I won't allow it!"
I forced a smile for him: "To take this arrow for you... it's worth it..."
"A Rou!"
His voice began to fade away.
As consciousness slipped from me, I saw tears rolling down his cheeks.
I'm sorry...
Once again, I would be the first to leave.
