As I entered high school, everything felt different. The unfamiliar classroom, new teachers, and strange classmates surrounded me. However, at least I still had Lu Zixuan. Although we weren't in the same class, we were at least in the same school.
On the first day of school, I walked into the classroom with my new textbooks, feeling a bit nervous as I scanned the room for familiar faces. Wait? Lu Zixuan was actually in our class! He was sitting in the back row, laughing and chatting with a few boys. When he saw me, he flashed a brilliant smile and waved. I froze for a moment but then smiled back at him, feeling suddenly much more at ease.
Hold on, that’s not right! I distinctly remembered that Lu Zixuan was supposed to be in the adjacent class according to the class list! Could it be…?
I walked over to him and asked curiously, “What are you doing here? Aren’t you in the other class?”
He winked mysteriously and said, “Hehe, I went through quite a bit of trouble just to be in the same class as you, Xiaoli! I pulled some strings and negotiated until I managed to switch!”
“What?! Are you crazy? You went through all that just to be in the same class as me?” I whispered in surprise.
He leaned closer with a grin and whispered back, “Of course it’s worth it!”
This guy was really… unexpected. Even though he called me a “nuisance,” warmth surged within me. “Lu Zixuan, you really are… something else!” I gently pushed him.
“Oh come on, what’s a little effort to see my Xiaoli every day?” he laughed and then turned to introduce me to the boys next to him. “This is Su Xiaoli, my Childhood Sweetheart!”
In the days that followed, I noticed that Lu Zixuan had changed quite a bit. He was no longer the mischievous boy from our childhood; he paid attention in class and even raised his hand to answer questions. Sometimes his answers were hilariously off-topic, causing bursts of laughter from our classmates, but he didn’t mind at all. Instead, he would chuckle and scratch his head. “This question… is a bit beyond what we’ve covered!” Well… how should I put it? At least it was clear he was trying.
Moreover, he had become particularly thoughtful. Every morning, there would be a steaming cup of milk tea waiting for me on my desk. “Here you go, Xiaoli! Your special milk tea!” During lunch, he would save me a seat and even help me get my food. “The sweet and sour ribs are great today; I made sure to get you extra!”
“Lu Zixuan, why are you so nice to me?” I couldn't help but ask him one day.
He was taken aback for a moment, then scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed as he replied, “Not at all! I just... do it out of habit.”
“Habit?” I said with a teasing smile, “You do this every day out of ‘habit’?”
His face turned red, and he stammered, unable to find the words. “Oh, Xiaoli, just don’t ask! I mean, I just want to be nice to you, is that so wrong?”
Seeing him flustered made me laugh. “Of course it’s fine! But if you keep this up, I might get the wrong idea!”
“Wrong idea about what?” he asked nervously.
“That you like me!” I teased him on purpose.
His face flushed even more, and he avoided my gaze. “Xiaoli, don’t say such things!”
Watching him shy away brought a sweet feeling to my heart. Although I pretended to dislike him, the truth was that I had started to pay attention to him secretly, noticing his every move. Perhaps my feelings for him were already more complicated than just ‘dislike.’
