“Am I going to be locked up here for the rest of my life?” In the lavishly decorated palace, Ling Yunchu quietly asked Xie Xiao, who had come to visit.
He pressed his lips together and heard Ling Yunchu continue, “What about He Chong? Has he already been… dismembered?”
Xie Xiao shook his head. “The Sovereign wants him to recover from his injuries before any dismemberment.” He glanced at the guards outside the door and lowered his voice. “I will find a way to set him free; you don’t need to worry.”
“Why?” Ling Yunchu asked in confusion. “Isn’t he eager to get rid of He Chong?”
“I pursued He Chong because he harmed the Sovereign. I won’t let anyone who injures others go unpunished. But I recently learned that the Sovereign was injured by the Tiger Demon as part of a scheme he devised. He wants to capture the Tiger Demon and extract its bones.” At this point, Xie Xiao clenched his fists in frustration; he never expected that the Sovereign had been coveting the Tiger Bones for so long, even hoping to use them for longevity!
Ling Yunchu scoffed. “I told you long ago that He Chong wouldn’t harm anyone.”
“I will save him,” Xie Xiao said firmly, as a way to atone for his mistakes. “And I will rescue you as well.”
Once Xie Xiao left, Ling Yunchu felt a slight sense of relief.
From the astonishment on Xie Xiao’s face when he saw her, it seemed he was unaware that she had been captured. It appeared he was indeed an honest person.
He should be able to rescue He Chong… With this thought, her heart, which had begun to relax, tightened again.
Two days later, Ling Yunchu was taken out of the imperial city by Xie Xiao and settled in a farmhouse outside Yun Cheng.
It was then that she heard about His Majesty suddenly falling gravely ill and being bedridden; it must have been Xie Xiao’s doing. Three days later, true to his word, Xie Xiao brought He Chong.
Upon seeing He Chong, Ling Yunchu stood frozen in place for a moment before slowly walking up to him and gently embracing him.
“Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost? Even Xie Xiao said I looked much better. You have no idea how well the Sovereign has been feeding me with all sorts of delicacies, worried that I wouldn’t recover properly.” Suddenly feeling pain in his waist, He Chong quickly changed his tone. “But look at you! You’ve turned yourself into a ghost; just look at your little face—how thin you’ve become!”
“He Chong,” Ling Yunchu looked up at him, recalling the moment when the Sovereign revealed the truth to her, her eyes slightly moist. “Do you know my father’s true identity?”
He Chong shook his head slightly. “At first, I didn’t know. When I heard your father was returning home, I planned to see him off but discovered he wasn’t heading towards Linjiang. I followed him all the way to the imperial city. Along the way, I accidentally revealed my presence and was severely injured by Xie Xiao, which is when I realized everything about you was fabricated by the Sovereign.”
“You knew? You knew and still wanted to save my father!” She shouted in exasperation, raising her hand as if to strike him.
"You only have him as your only family member. Moreover," He Chong grasped her wrist, " Butcher Ling also considers you family. After Xie Xiao let me go, he came to see me and urged me to take good care of you. Water drops can penetrate stone; how could he not know of your kindness towards him? I initially wanted to rescue him so we could sort things out together, but who would have thought so many complications would arise? Keeping this from you was truly unavoidable, Yun Chu. I did this for your own good."
"Yun Chu, I did this for your own good."
Those words were the first line of her mother's letter. Her elderly mother, paralyzed and bedridden, chose to end her own life to avoid being a burden.
In her sorrow, she wandered aimlessly through the streets until she stumbled upon the reopening of the local circus and decided to take a look.
If it hadn't been for that, she wouldn't have experienced such bizarre events.
She remembered those familiar eyes—the tiger that had approached her in the circus.
In her final moments, the last thing she saw were those eyes; they belonged to He Chong.
She also recalled how the tiger had rested its paw in her palm, followed by a warm breath emanating from her hand.
Subconsciously, she felt that the tiger was saving her, but then that warmth faded away, plunging her into an endless darkness.
When she awoke again, she found herself in Nan Yun Kingdom.
"Your version of 'for my own good' may not be what I desire," Ling Yunchu said softly.
"Then I will give you what you truly wish for in the future."
The intense gaze filled with affection left Ling Yunchu at a loss. She had no choice but to retract her hand and change the subject. "Xie Xiao, Sovereign said you told him long ago that I hold significant meaning for He Chong. Why do you think that?"
"Because..." Xie Xiao opened his mouth but was met with He Chong's fierce glare nearby, causing him to quickly fall silent. He chuckled and said, "That would require your rigorous interrogation."
It seemed Ling Yunchu had completely forgotten their first meeting.
He chuckled softly to himself and clasped his hands in apology towards He Chong before taking his leave.
He Chong lowered his gaze and looked at Ling Yunchu, his expression gentle as he said, "Yun Cheng can’t stay here any longer. My lady, let us wander the world together."
Ling Yunchu smiled faintly and replied softly, "Alright."
In the tranquil little courtyard, the sound of singing floated through the air, the soft voices of children sounding particularly pleasant.
He Chong stepped into the house and was immediately met by a small child who rushed into his arms.
He nuzzled against the child's tender cheek and asked in a low voice, " Liang'er, have you been good today?"
He was well aware of how mischievous his son could be.
"I’ve been good! Mother just taught me to sing," the little one replied, shaking his head enthusiastically. "I sang for Daddy: One, two, three, four, five, up the mountain to catch a tiger. The tiger called He Chong, and it was beaten like a worm."
He Chong's smile froze as he carried his son into the room.
Inside, Ling Yunchu was carefully mending their son's clothes, her eyes filled with warmth and affection.
He Chong couldn't help but recall the first time he met Ling Yunchu. At that time, in his beast form, he sat on a platform waiting for the Beast Tamer's command to leap through the fire ring.
Casually scanning the audience, his gaze settled on one person.
That person was Ling Yunchu.
She was smiling brighter than anyone else, yet there was a heart-wrenching sadness in her eyes.
It only took a moment to tug at his heartstrings; instinct told him that this woman was different from all others to him.
However, he had no time to ponder further as a figure appearing not far away filled him with disgust and made him curse silently.
The Exorcist had chased him all the way from Nan Yun to the modern world, and there was no escaping it.
With a flick of his tail, the black bear that had been quietly sitting nearby erupted into chaos under his spell.
His intention was to create confusion and slip away, but things spiraled out of his control. The frenzied black bear charged through the barrier towards the audience—
The scene descended into chaos as spectators fled in all directions.
He Chong leaped down and approached the woman.
She had been bitten by the bear, blood gushing from her shoulder. Her vacant eyes first stared blankly at the ceiling before slowly meeting his gaze.
He was injured himself; he shouldn’t use his spiritual power, as it would only exacerbate his wounds and provide the Exorcist with an opportunity.
But she was hurt because of him, and her suffering stirred a restlessness in his usually calm heart…
He seemed to forget that he was still in beast form when a whip from the Beast Tamer struck him, abruptly interrupting his attempt to rescue her.
The backlash of spiritual energy sent a piercing pain through him, and he fainted.
As his consciousness faded, he vaguely recited the incantation for the Heaven-Defying Technique. When he opened his eyes again, he found himself back in Nan Yun.
In truth, there was little difference for him between the modern world and Nan Yun. However, when he happened to pass by a marketplace and saw that woman fiercely driving away troublemakers, he felt a clear joy deep within him slowly spreading, bit by bit.
