"I've known your identity for a long time, Lucy."
Drake's deep voice echoed in my ears, sending a shiver down my spine and making my heart skip a beat.
"Then why didn't you say anything?"
I instinctively tightened my grip on the champagne glass in my hand, my knuckles turning slightly white.
Drake's penetrating gaze fell upon my face, as if he were trying to see right through me.
"Because what I value is your ability, not your identity."
He spoke slowly, his tone imbued with an undeniable firmness.
Those words flowed into my heart like a warm current, but they were soon followed by an even greater pressure, like an invisible mountain weighing down on my shoulders.
The next morning, I arrived at the office early as usual, immersing myself fully in the work for the new project.
"Lucy, the data analysis report for Project A needs to be submitted by this afternoon."
Linda sashayed over to my desk, her signature sweet smile plastered across her face.
"President Drake is particularly focused on this project," she added with a hint of veiled threat in her tone.
I glanced at the time in the bottom right corner of my computer screen; it was already ten in the morning. Completing the entire report by the afternoon felt like an impossible task.
"Alright, I'll finish it on time."
Despite my inner complaints, I forced myself to agree.
As Linda turned to leave, I keenly caught a glimpse of a smug smile at the corner of her mouth.
I couldn't afford to slack off, so I immediately immersed myself in the intense work, carefully analyzing each set of data.
Just as I was nearing completion, I suddenly noticed several key data points showing anomalies, as if someone had tampered with them.
I repeatedly cross-checked the original data and was shocked to discover that someone had secretly altered the database!
Who could it be?
Why would they do this?
"Linda, these data have been tampered with," I said, holding up the printed evidence as I approached her, my tone laced with accusation.
"Oh?"
Linda arched her meticulously groomed eyebrows and asked, "Are you implying that I did something?"
"No, I'm just stating the facts," I replied, trying to keep my tone calm.
"Lucy, do you know something?"
Suddenly, Linda leaned closer, lowering her voice. "Sometimes, being too smart is not a good thing."
Her words dripped with a threatening undertone, like a snake poised to strike.
Just then, Drake stepped out of his office. "Lucy, come to my office for a moment."
His voice shattered the tense atmosphere that hung between Linda and me.
Linda looked at me triumphantly, her gaze seemingly saying, "You're done for!"
I took a deep breath and followed Drake into his office.
"President, I can explain the data anomaly..."
I was cut off by Drake.
"No need to explain."
He handed me a document.
"This is the result of the investigation I had the tech department conduct. Someone is trying to sabotage your work, and I will handle it."
I was taken aback; I hadn't realized Drake had been keeping an eye on this matter all along.
How much did he know?
Just as I let out a sigh of relief, my phone suddenly rang, the screen flashing the word "Father."
"Lucy, resign immediately, or the stock price of Drake Corporation will plummet tomorrow."
My father's voice was cold and piercing, like a sharp knife stabbing into my heart.
I tightened my grip on the phone, my knuckles turning white from the pressure.
"Father, I will not resign."
I said firmly.
"Then just wait and see the show unfold."
My father scoffed before hanging up the phone.
I looked up at Drake, who was focused on me, his eyes filled with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.
"I will handle it."
He said softly, his tone gentle yet carrying an undeniable strength.
Just then, Linda burst into the office in a flurry.
"President, it's bad! Confidential company documents have been leaked!"
Her voice was sharp and piercing, and my heart sank as a wave of ominous foreboding washed over me.
I stared at the data flashing on the computer screen, as if I could sense a much larger storm brewing.
