Chapter Two
The morning sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, casting a soft glow in the room, yet it could not dispel the chill within me. I slowly sat up in bed, my head heavy and foggy; the tears I shed last night seemed to have drained me of all my strength.
I looked at my reflection in the mirror—my eyes were red and swollen, my face pale. It was a visage I could hardly recognize. Years of emotions and sacrifices had culminated in this outcome, and I couldn't help but ask myself why I had fallen to such depths.
Suddenly, my phone rang, displaying the name Cheng Yifan. I hesitated for a moment but ultimately answered the call.
“ Yingying, there’s an important meeting at the company today. I might be home late,” his tone was as indifferent as ever, as if last night's argument had never occurred.
“Okay, I understand,” I tried to keep my voice steady, but the grievances within me surged like a tide. He didn’t even offer a single greeting or a word of concern.
“By the way, Lin Mengyao isn’t feeling well today. I’ve asked her to stay at our place; please take care of her,” Cheng Yifan's voice remained calm, but this statement struck me like a bolt from the blue, shattering whatever composure I had left.
“What?” My voice rose sharply, almost a shout. “Why is she staying at our house?”
“She’s unwell and needs someone to look after her.” Cheng Yifan's tone was devoid of any fluctuation, as if this was entirely reasonable.
“But I’m your wife!” I could hardly believe my ears; anger and resentment flared up within me like wildfire. “You’re actually letting her stay in our home?”
“ Yingying, why are you always so unreasonable?” A hint of impatience crept into Cheng Yifan's voice. “She’s only staying for a few days; why can’t you understand?”
“Understand?” I let out a cold laugh, tears threatening to spill over. “How can I understand? You let another woman into our home and expect me to take care of her? Cheng Yifan, what do you take me for?”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, as if he too realized how absurd his request was. But soon enough, his voice returned, still cold and unfeeling: “ Yingying, it’s just temporary; you don’t need to be so upset.”
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself, but the anger in my heart was impossible to suppress. I struggled to maintain my composure, but the tremor in my voice betrayed the collapse within me.
“Cheng Yifan, I have never hated you this much,” I whispered, my voice filled with despair and pain. “You have disappointed me beyond measure.”
“ Yingying, I’m really busy right now. Let’s talk later,” he replied tersely before hanging up.
I clutched my phone, trembling all over, as the pain and grievance inside me threatened to consume me. How could this man treat me like this? He had actually let Lin Mengyao move into our home and even expected me to take care of her? What did he think I was?
The anger and humiliation within me burned like a raging fire; I could no longer endure this endless degradation. I slammed my phone onto the ground, allowing tears to flow freely.
Just then, the doorbell rang. I paused for a moment before slowly walking to the door. The instant I opened it, my heart was pierced once more.
Standing at the door was Lin Mengyao. She looked somewhat haggard, yet a faint smile lingered on her face, as if she were the mistress of this place and I were merely a humble servant.
“ Yingying, I’m feeling a bit unwell today, so I’ll be staying at your place for now,” she said softly, her tone carrying an undeniable confidence that left no room for refusal.
I gritted my teeth, fighting to control myself and prevent more tears from falling. My heart was filled with humiliation and rage, but I knew I had to remain calm; I couldn’t let her see my weakness.
“Do you think this is appropriate?” My voice was icy, my gaze revealing unmasked disdain.
“ Yingying, I know you might be upset, but this is Cheng Yifan’s decision,” she sighed gently, as if she had anticipated my reaction. “We’re all adults here; we should learn to understand and tolerate each other.”
“Understand and tolerate?” I scoffed, feeling my anger reach its peak. “Lin Mengyao, do you really think you can just move into our home whenever you please?”
She smiled faintly, not directly answering my question, but gently patting my shoulder. " Yingying, we will be family from now on. You should learn to accept that."
Family? Those three words made me feel a wave of nausea. I looked at her coldly, feeling as if my heart was being tightly squeezed by someone, making it hard to breathe.
I suddenly realized that I had lost all dignity and boundaries in this marriage. I once thought that love could conquer all, but now it seemed I was nothing but a ridiculous fool, struggling in a relationship that was doomed to fail from the start.
"Do whatever you want," I said coldly before turning and walking into the house, ignoring her completely. I knew that no matter what I said or did, it wouldn't change this crumbling reality.
I sat on the sofa, feeling as if all my strength had been drained away. I no longer had the power to fight back or salvage anything. The pain and humiliation in my heart had reached their limit; all I could do was silently endure it, waiting for this nightmare to end.
