Chapter Eight: The Entanglement of Love and Hate
In the high-level conference room of Gu Group, Gu Changting frowned deeply, a stack of documents lay before him, but he had no desire to go through them. Suddenly, his phone screen lit up with an email from a law firm. Upon opening it, a divorce agreement came into view.
The content of the agreement was straightforward, clearly stating that Su Ruolan voluntarily wished to dissolve their marriage, relinquishing any claims to property division and no longer pursuing any rights.
Gu Changting stared at the document with a flash of anger in his eyes. He slammed his phone down on the table, stood up, and quickly drove to the law firm.
---
Ruolan was sitting in the cramped living room of Li Xiaoling's home, sorting through her old belongings. A series of urgent knocks broke the silence. Li Xiaoling opened the door to find Gu Changting standing there with a grim expression, holding the agreement in his hand.
"Lanlan, he..." Li Xiaoling began to speak, but Gu Changting had already barged into the room.
"Su Ruolan, what exactly do you want?" Gu Changting's voice was as cold as ice, his gaze locked onto Ruolan. "For whom? Are you willing to give up everything?"
Ruolan paused for a moment before responding calmly, "This is my decision. Our marriage has always been a mistake; letting go is better for both of us."
"Letting go?" Gu Changting scoffed and slammed the agreement down on the table. "Do you think this piece of paper can solve anything? Do you realize your current health condition? What you need is treatment, not this meaningless 'letting go'!"
Ruolan lifted her head and met his gaze directly. "Gu Changting, my body is my own business; it has nothing to do with you."
"Nothing to do with me?" Gu Changting stepped forward abruptly, grabbing her wrist with barely contained anger. "Why do you always do this? Bury everything inside and bear it all alone without giving anyone a chance!"
Ruolan's hand trembled slightly, but she stubbornly held his gaze. "I don't need a chance or your pity. I just don't want to be a burden to you."
---
The heated argument shattered Ruolan's inner defenses completely; she could no longer suppress her emotions as tears blurred her vision.
"Yes, I'm sick! I might not have much time left!" She shouted with all her strength, her chest heaving violently. "So I don't want to drag anyone down anymore; I don't want you to bear anything!"
Upon hearing this, Gu Changting froze. His clenched fists gradually relaxed as shock and guilt filled his eyes. He opened his mouth but found himself unable to say anything.
Ruolan turned away, wiped her tears away, and said softly, "Gu Changting, it's over between us. Please stop entangling yourself."
---
After leaving Li Xiaoling's home, Gu Changting sat alone in his car for a long time without being able to calm down. He closed his eyes as Ruolan's face repeatedly flashed in his mind, his voice low and self-mocking: "It turns out I have always been wrong."
He recalled every moment in their marriage—Ruolan's endurance, her sacrifices, and those details he had overlooked. It felt like being pricked by needles; guilt and self-blame washed over him.
---
Meanwhile, Lin Wanran stood in the office of Gu Group, looking out at the bustling city through the floor-to-ceiling windows. A smug smile graced her face.
“Su Ruolan is indeed quite a threat,” she muttered to herself. “But once she leaves for good, Gu Changting will eventually realize that I am the only one suited to stand by his side.”
She dialed Manager Wang's number, her tone sweet yet laced with calculation. “Manager Wang, I need your help with something. Since she wants to withdraw completely, let’s see her off properly.”
On the other end of the line, Manager Wang chuckled heartily. “Miss Lin is indeed clever. Leave this matter to me; I won’t let her have any chance of making a comeback.”
---
A few days later, Gu Changting visited Li Xiaoling's home again, only to find that Ruolan was no longer there. A heavy feeling settled in his heart as he quickly dialed her number, but it went unanswered.
Li Xiaoling sighed helplessly. “She really doesn’t want to burden you, Chang Ting. I don’t know where she has gone, but I do know that she just wants you to live well.”
Gu Changting remained silent, gripping his phone tightly as an unsettling feeling began to rise within him. Standing on the street, he gazed at the bustling crowd, yet felt utterly lost inside.
