Chapter Nine: Warmth in the Darkness
Su Ruolan sat outside the examination room in the hospital, her hands tightly gripping her knees, her fingertips turning white from the pressure. The doctor's words pierced through her last line of defense like a sharp knife.
"Miss Su, the tumor is spreading rapidly. We need to operate as soon as possible; otherwise, the situation will only worsen." The doctor's voice carried a rational warning, but it left Ruolan feeling utterly hopeless.
She forced a smile, albeit a strained one. "Thank you, doctor, but I need some time to think."
As she stepped out of the hospital, the bustling streets felt alien to her. The doctor's advice echoed in her mind repeatedly, and the exhaustion in her body combined with the loneliness in her heart made it difficult for her to stand.

"Su Ruolan!" A familiar voice called from behind. Ruolan turned to see Gu Changting standing among the crowd, his gaze fixed intently on her.
"How did you find me?" Ruolan's expression shifted slightly, instinctively wanting to avoid him.
"I told you, I can find you wherever you go," Gu Changting said as he quickly approached and blocked her path. "I know about your condition."
Ruolan was taken aback for a moment before she scoffed coldly. "If you know, then you should understand that I don't need your interference."
But Gu Changting did not back down; his eyes were deep and unwavering. "Interference? Ruolan, if you're willing to give up on your life, how could I possibly stand by and do nothing?"
"Do you think I need your pity?" Ruolan's voice trembled with anger. "Gu Changting, what do you want from me?"
Gu Changting stepped closer, taking a deep breath. His tone was firm yet low. "I don't want anything. I just want to be with you. I can't stop your decisions, but what I can do is stay by your side, even if you hate me for it."
Ruolan's body trembled slightly; tears shimmered in her eyes, but she bit her lip to hold them back.

A few days later, in the Gu Group conference room, Manager Wang sat at one end of the long table with a smug smile on his face. "General Gu, this cooperation plan is beneficial for both parties. I hope you can approve it soon."
However, Gu Changting remained unmoved, staring coldly at him. "I'm not interested in your plan at this time."
Manager Wang's expression changed instantly as he hurriedly replied, "General Gu, this is an opportunity for you and the Gu Family. If you don't consider it, we might—"
"Threaten me?" Gu Changting stood up, his gaze sharp as a knife. "Manager Wang, let me warn you: don’t think I’m unaware of what you and Lin Wanran have been up to. If I catch wind of any more of your little schemes, you won’t be welcome in this city anymore."
Manager Wang's face turned pale as cold sweat trickled down his forehead. "General Gu, this... this is a misunderstanding..."
"Get out." Gu Changting spat out the word coldly before turning to leave.

In the hospital room, Ruolan sat quietly, her gaze lost in the sky outside the window, a hint of confusion in her eyes. Li Xiaoling sat beside her, worry etched on her face. "Lanlan, Chang Ting really wants to help you. Can't you try to accept that?"
Ruolan shook her head and smiled bitterly. "I have no future; I have become a burden from his past. Why should I continue to weigh him down?"
"He doesn't think that way," Li Xiaoling said, holding her hand with a hint of determination in her voice. " Lanlan, you are not alone; you still have us."
Ruolan lowered her head, remaining silent for a long time before whispering, "I just... don't know how to face it."

That night, Gu Changting stood outside the hospital room, watching Ruolan inside. Her face was pale, yet it still bore that stubbornness. His heart twisted painfully, and his clenched fist gradually relaxed.
" Ruolan..." he murmured softly, as if speaking to her and to himself at the same time. "Do you know? You are my life."
