Chapter Four
I stood at the edge of the cliff in the southern part of the city, the cold wind slicing through my face like sharp knives, my robe fluttering in the breeze, whispering like a ghostly presence. Below me lay an unfathomable abyss, a monstrous beast waiting silently to devour me. In the distance, the city lights flickered like distant stars, casting a mesmerizing glow that did nothing to warm my frozen heart. The moon tonight hid behind thick clouds, shrouding the world in darkness, as if even the heavens mourned for the tragedy about to unfold.
The midnight bells tolled, each chime striking my eardrums and resonating in my heart. With every toll, I felt death drawing closer. Yuyan's pale and despairing face, along with her last words, haunted me like a nightmare: "This is our final resting place." Could this truly be our fate?
Suddenly, a chilling gust of wind swept past me, carrying a faint scent of plum blossoms. This familiar fragrance sent shivers down my spine. I knew she had come. In the thick darkness of night, a blood-red kite slowly emerged, resembling a droplet of congealed blood, emitting an eerie glow as it floated erratically through the air like a ghost wandering in the shadows.
"Yuyan..." My voice trembled, sounding particularly feeble against the howling wind.
The kite descended slowly and stopped just a few steps away from me before dispersing like a mist of blood, gradually coalescing into Yuyan's form. She still wore that red long dress, gently swaying in the night breeze like a blooming spider lily—beautiful yet exuding an aura of death. Her complexion was as pale as paper, as if she could vanish at any moment; her eyes brimmed with endless sorrow that shattered my heart.
"Young Master, do you truly wish to accompany me?" Her voice was weak and ethereal, like a call from hell.
I couldn't help but take a step forward, yearning to touch her face and feel her warmth. Yet my hand passed through her body, leaving only a chilling void. It dawned on me that she was no longer alive but rather a spirit. "As long as I can be with you, what is there to fear in life or death?" My tone was resolute, devoid of hesitation.
Tears welled up in Yuyan's eyes; crystalline droplets slid down her cheeks but transformed into crimson mist before they could touch the ground, dissipating into the air. "But do you know why I became like this? That night, after you were killed..." Her voice choked with emotion as if struggling to speak.
At that moment, hurried footsteps echoed from afar, accompanied by fragmented incantations that shattered the suffocating silence. "Over there!" A sharp voice pierced the night—Son of the Right Chancellor—filled with arrogance and cruelty. "Daoist, hurry and cast your spell!"
The light from dozens of torches flickered along the winding mountain path like a fire dragon approaching us. An elderly man clad in a Daoist robe stood at the forefront of the group, wielding a Peach Wood Sword and chanting incantations. A powerful wave of spiritual energy radiated from him.
"This is bad!" Yuyan's figure began to blur as if she might vanish at any moment. "They’ve summoned Maushan Taoist to dispel my resentment!" Her voice trembled with fear and despair.
I watched the approaching flames, and suddenly, everything became clear to me. "It's the Son of the Right Chancellor! He won't let you go, will he? Even though you..." My voice was low, tinged with anger and helplessness.
"Yes." Yuyan's voice was filled with hatred, like a curse from hell. "After your death, he still forced me to marry him. I refused, and on the third day after you died, I..." Her voice choked again, tears turning into a mist of blood that floated in the air.
"You took your own life." I finally understood everything, my heart aching as if gripped tightly by an invisible hand. "You used your life to trap my soul in a kite, just to wait for this day, to seek revenge on him."
"I'm sorry, my lord." Yuyan's tears fell like rain but turned into crimson mist before they touched the ground. "I wanted your soul to stay with me forever, but I didn't expect them to pursue us so relentlessly. Now, we have only one path left." Her voice was filled with determination.
The incantations of the Taoist grew closer; I could feel a powerful force tearing at us. Yuyan's figure was fading, almost dissipating into the night wind.
"It's too late!" she suddenly cried out, her voice resolute. "My lord, let us jump together! Only then can our souls be together forever!"
I looked down at the bottomless cliff beneath me and then at the approaching flames. In a daze, I seemed to see that rainy night three years ago, Yuyan's desperate eyes, and the moment she sacrificed herself for me.
"Alright." I reached out my hand; though I couldn't touch her, I could feel her presence. "This time, let's go together."
The Taoist's incantations were almost upon us, and the flames illuminated the entire cliff. At that moment, Yuyan and I leaped off simultaneously. As we fell, our souls gradually merged into one, transforming into two blood-red kites that intertwined in the night sky, flying toward the endless darkness.
The Son of the Right Chancellor rushed to the edge of the cliff and watched as the two red lights vanished into the night; his face turned pale with rage. The Taoist sheathed his Peach Wood Sword and sighed, "The vengeful spirits have dispersed, but the curse of the Blood-Red Kite will likely overshadow the Su Family forever..."
The mountain wind howled; it seemed one could still hear a man and a woman's laughter echoing in the air. From then on, whenever night fell silent, two blood-red kites could always be seen dancing under the moonlight in the southern sky of the city, telling a tragic love story.
And that once-prominent Su Family fell into irreversible decline under the weight of the curse...
