The next day, I arrived early at the Sixth Princess's chambers. Although it was called a chamber, it resembled a small office, cluttered with piles of official documents and papers everywhere.
"It seems my first task is to implement some 5S management here," I muttered to myself as I began to tidy up the desk.
"5... what?" A familiar voice came from behind me.
I jumped slightly and turned to see Xiao Yuan standing at the door, having appeared out of nowhere. How could he walk so silently?
"Lord Commander," I greeted him with a bow. "I meant... to organize this place properly."
He stepped inside and looked around. "How do you plan to organize it?"
Just as I was about to explain, a brilliant idea struck me. "How about... you participate, Lord Commander?"
"Participate?"
"Yes!" My eyes lit up. "You see, these documents need sorting, these letters need ordering, and these..."
"Wait," he interrupted me. "This official is here to supervise, not to help you with your work."
But I could tell he was somewhat intrigued. I recognized that expression all too well; it was like when our company leaders would say they wouldn't interfere, only to secretly lend a hand.
"Then how about you just... guide me?" I blinked innocently.
Xiao Yuan paused for a moment before finally relenting. "Tell me your thoughts."
"First," I immediately shifted into work mode, "we need to assign a place for each type of document. Important documents should be kept close at hand, while ordinary papers can be placed further away. Next..."
Just as I was speaking, hurried footsteps echoed from outside.
"Commander!" a palace maid rushed in, flustered. "There's a fire in the palace!"
What?! Xiao Yuan and I turned simultaneously.
"It's at Chuxiu Palace!" the maid gasped for breath. "The personal maid of Consort Tai Zi accidentally knocked over a lamp..."
Xiao Yuan immediately started toward the door, but I grabbed his sleeve. "Wait!"
"What?" He turned back, his gaze lingering on my hand gripping his sleeve for a moment.
I quickly released him but spoke firmly. "Lord Commander, there's something suspicious about this."
"What do you mean?"
"Think about it," I lowered my voice. "How could the Crown Princess's personal maid be so careless? Moreover... today is the day the Sixth Princess is supposed to visit Chuxiu Palace for flower viewing."
Xiao Yuan's gaze sharpened. "Are you saying...?"
"This is a trap," I affirmed. Years of experience in the workplace had taught me that the timing of an incident often revealed the most.
He stared at me for a moment before suddenly saying, "Follow me."
"Ah?"
"Since you've spotted the problem," he quickened his pace, "help this official analyze it."
I thought to myself, is he taking me to the scene for an investigation?
As I jogged to keep up with him, I couldn't help but tease, "Lord Commander, are you taking me to be a detective?"
"A detective... what?"
"Just... someone who investigates cases," I quickly clarified.
He rarely showed a hint of amusement, but now there was a slight smile on his face. "What's wrong? Are you unwilling?"
"No!" I shook my head vigorously. "I just think... it's a bit unexpected."
"What's so unexpected about it?" His tone remained cool, but his eyes softened slightly. "This official just thinks... your thoughts are quite unique."
Unique? This was nothing more than ordinary workplace intuition!
But looking at his serious profile, I suddenly understood why the system always said he had feelings for me. Could this Lord Commander be pursuing me through work?
I quickly dismissed that absurd thought. Rule number one of the workplace: do not develop inappropriate fantasies about your superior!
However... his back was rather good-looking.
