“Lord Commander,” I lowered my voice, “the Crown Prince’s side is starting to take the bait.”
In recent days, the Crown Prince's Residence has sent an endless stream of Beauty Traps and sweet treats. Xiao Yuan has been playing along, alternating between being aloof and accepting, his acting skills surpassing my expectations.
“Hmm.” He continued reviewing the documents without looking up. “So?”
“So…” I leaned in a little closer. “What do you think their next move will be?”
Xiao Yuan glanced at me. “Curious, are we?”
“Of course!” I blinked. “This is my first design…”
Before I could finish my sentence, hurried footsteps echoed from outside. Instinctively, I tried to hide, but Xiao Yuan grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t hide,” he whispered. “It’s better if they see us.”
This… this position is too ambiguous! His warm palm enveloped my wrist, causing my heart to race uncontrollably.
Sure enough, the person who entered was guard Zhao, a favored aide of the Crown Prince. His gaze lingered on our hands for a moment before a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.
“Lord Commander,” he saluted, “His Highness requests your presence tonight to listen to music.”
Listen to music? My heart tightened. This is a trap!
Xiao Yuan casually released my hand. “Understood.”
Once guard Zhao left, I immediately leaned closer. “Lord Commander, this must be a scheme!”
“How so?” he asked.
“Think about it,” I lowered my voice. “First it was the Beauty Trap, then the sweet treats—none of it worked. Now they’re directly inviting you to listen to music; it must be…”
“It’s a setup for me,” he finished for me. “So you’re quite worried?”
“Of course I’m worried!” I blurted out. “What if they…”
Realizing halfway through my sentence that this was all an act, I caught myself: Wait, why am I so nervous?
Xiao Yuan suddenly stood up, looking down at me. “So, are you genuinely worried or just acting?”
I was momentarily speechless. This question… even I didn’t know the answer.
“Well… it’s part of the job,” I forced myself to sound calm. “To make the Crown Prince believe you’ve been turned, I have to act like…”
“Like what?” He leaned in closer. “Like a flustered young girl who cares too much?”
He was too close, and I could clearly smell the refreshing scent of pine on him. Did this man... discover something?
"I'm not flustered!" I stiffened my neck and insisted, "This is... this is professional ethics!"
"Professional ethics?" He chuckled lightly, reaching out to gently tuck a stray hair behind my ear. "Then why are your ears turning red?"
I hurriedly stepped back. "Who—who's ears are red!"
"Well," he said with a teasing smile, "they're not red; it's your face that's flushed."
"Oh my gosh! This is way too gentle!" The system exclaimed excitedly, stumbling over its words. "Host, how much longer are you going to keep up this facade?"
"I—I'm not putting on a facade!" I shot back at the system.
"Lord Commander!" I said seriously, "You should think about how to deal with the Crown Prince tonight!"
"How so?" He raised an eyebrow. "Do you have any ideas?"
"Um..." I thought for a moment. "What if I go with you?"
"No way." His tone suddenly turned serious. "It's too dangerous."
"But..."
"No buts." He interrupted me. "This time, this official will go alone."
I panicked. "What if they set a trap? What if you get drunk? What if..."
"Don't worry," he said, reaching out to tap my forehead lightly. "This official won't get drunk."
"That still doesn't work!" I blurted out. "You have to take me with you!"
As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted it. Why did that sound like I was being spoiled?
Xiao Yuan paused for a moment before suddenly laughing. "Alright."
"Huh?" This time it was my turn to be stunned.
"This official said alright." He spoke softly, "But you have to promise me one condition."
"What condition?"
"If things go awry," he looked at me seriously, "you must leave immediately and not worry about this official."
"Oh! This is such a classic line from a domineering CEO!" The system gushed, "He’s showing concern for you!"
I looked up and met his gaze. "No."
"Hmm?"
"I mean... this doesn't align with the plan." I tried to keep my tone businesslike. "If something happens to you, wouldn't all of this be for nothing?"
"Host, oh host," the system sighed in exasperation. "That excuse is a bit too flimsy, don't you think? Can't you just say you're worried about him?"
Xiao Yuan stared at me for a moment before suddenly reaching out to ruffle my hair.
In that instant, my heart skipped a beat. Why was this man so gentle?
Wait! What am I thinking? Rule number one of the workplace: Do not develop unnecessary feelings for your targets!
But... looking into his tender eyes, I suddenly felt that perhaps this rule wasn't as important as I once thought.
