At that tense moment, the cold voice of the Sixth Princess suddenly rang out, "What does Your Highness mean? Are you going to detain my people as well?"
The Crown Prince's expression changed, "Why is Liu Mei here?"
"Why not?" The Sixth Princess walked in with a group of guards, her gaze sweeping over Xiao Yuan's hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Is my presence at Qingfeng Pavilion not welcome?"
Her arrival was like a breath of fresh air, instantly diffusing the tense atmosphere. But I knew that this covert struggle had only just begun.
"Liu Mei, this is..." The Crown Prince's smile seemed forced. "What brings you here all of a sudden?"
The Sixth Princess gracefully took her seat opposite the Crown Prince. "I heard that Your Highness was hosting a banquet for Commander Xiao, and I thought I might join to listen to some music."
She spoke lightly, but everyone could tell she was providing an escape for Xiao Yuan.
"Since Liu Mei is here," a shadow flickered in the Crown Prince's eyes, "why not share a drink?"
As he spoke, he gestured for the Dancer to bring the suspicious jug of wine to the Sixth Princess.
I watched from behind the screen, my heart racing. They were planning to ensnare the Sixth Princess as well!
But the Sixth Princess merely chuckled lightly, "Did Your Highness forget? The Imperial Physician said I shouldn't drink." She turned to Xiao Yuan, "Lord Commander, didn't you say you needed to report on military matters?"
Xiao Yuan understood her cue. "Yes. Your Highness, I take my leave."
The Crown Prince's expression darkened, "Liu Mei intends to take someone away?"
"Your Highness's words are strange," the Sixth Princess raised an eyebrow slightly. " Commander Xiao is someone Father sent for me. Do you expect him to stay with you indefinitely?"
Her words were flawless, leaving the Crown Prince unable to retort.
I followed Xiao Yuan out but heard the Crown Prince's meaningful voice behind us: "Lord Commander, you should think carefully about what the princess said."
Xiao Yuan paused, turning back with a respectful gesture. "I will keep it in mind."
Once we exited Qingfeng Pavilion, the Sixth Princess quietly remarked, " Commander Xiao, you both acted quite convincingly."
I was taken aback.
"You knew all along?" I couldn't help but ask.
The Sixth Princess smiled without answering but gave us a knowing look. "I just think... some people get so immersed in their roles that they forget they are acting."
What did that mean? I was about to inquire further when I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my arm.
"You’re hurt?" Xiao Yuan exclaimed as he grabbed my wrist, concern evident in his voice.
I just noticed a scratch on my sleeve, probably from when guard Zhao grabbed me earlier.
"It's nothing," I tried to pull my hand back. "Just a surface wound..."
Before I could finish my sentence, I saw Xiao Yuan already tearing off a corner of my sleeve, gently wrapping it around my injury. His focused expression made my heart race uncontrollably.
"Male lead has activated his protective mode!" the system suddenly bubbled with excitement. "Look at how gentle he is, it's simply amazing!"
I rolled my eyes internally. "Can you be a bit more serious?"
"Who told you to be so careless!" Xiao Yuan scolded softly, examining my wound closely. "You’re not allowed to take risks anymore."
"Aren't we just acting?" I said, trying to sound casual. "Besides, I'm your assistant; it's my duty to protect my boss."
"Acting?" He suddenly looked up at me, his gaze deep and penetrating. "Do you really think This Official was acting just now?"
I was momentarily speechless. What did he mean by that...?
"Host, are you really that dense?" the system couldn't help but interject. "It's so obvious!"
Just as I was about to retort, I suddenly heard footsteps approaching from a distance. Xiao Yuan immediately released my hand, reverting to his usual cold demeanor.
But that fleeting moment of tenderness left me unsettled for a long time. This man... was he acting or did he genuinely care about me?
"Ding! New task issued: Confirm the male lead's true feelings!" the system chirped happily. "Reward: 2000 points!"
"Shut up!" I mentally shouted. "This isn't the time for that!"
Yet... why was my heart still racing? Rule number one of workplace conduct: Do not develop personal feelings for your target. But... this rule seemed increasingly difficult to follow.
