Under the moonlight, Xiao Yuan's figure glided like a specter over the palace walls. He had just returned from the Imperial Garden, tightly clutching the familiar jade pendant in his hand, his gaze chillingly fierce.
"Investigate the guards on duty in the Imperial Garden tonight," he instructed his confidant in a low voice. "Do not alert any suspicious individuals."
"Understood!" The guard hurried off to carry out the order.
Xiao Yuan crouched down, carefully examining the footprints on the ground. Three people had passed through here; one of them had an unsteady gait, likely dragged after being knocked unconscious. They headed west... towards a path leading to the outskirts of the city.
His fingers unconsciously traced the lotus pattern on the jade pendant. This was the first time he had given away something so personal, and he never expected to see it again under such circumstances.
"You reckless girl..." he murmured softly, a hint of worry lacing his tone. He should have sent someone to follow her.
"Lord Commander!" His confidant rushed back, "I found something! The two guards stationed to the west tonight are new recruits, both transferred from guard Zhao's command!"
Xiao Yuan's expression darkened. "Investigate the abandoned hunting grounds on the outskirts."
"Sir, I don't understand why—"
"Spices," Xiao Yuan replied coolly. "The people from the Crown Prince's Residence have been using pine incense from the same shop."
As he spoke, he mounted his horse. Under the moonlight, his cold features bore a trace of urgency. This girl was always clever; if she dared to leave behind the pendant, she must have left other clues as well.
Hopefully... he could find her before dawn.
Lost in thought, he suddenly heard a faint whistle from afar. It was a signal! They had indeed found suspicious traces at the hunting grounds.
Xiao Yuan spurred his horse forward, but an unusual emotion stirred within him. Despite having sworn never to let anyone into his heart again, seeing that pendant had nearly unleashed his murderous intent.
When had this girl crept into his heart?
As he approached the encirclement that had been set up, Xiao Yuan suddenly heard a muffled sound coming from inside a building. Not good! They were about to move the hostage! With no time to wait for reinforcements, he made a swift decision and charged toward the woodshed.
"Bang!" The door was kicked open.
Just as I was contemplating how to buy some time, a tall figure burst in. Looking up, I nearly gasped—Xiao Yuan stood there in dark attire, his sword-like brows and starry eyes cloaked in frost, exuding an intimidating aura.
"Ding! The male lead makes a stunning entrance!" The system squealed excitedly. "This cold-faced prince has an incredible presence!"
"Shut up!" I mentally shouted back. "What prince? Is this some kind of idol drama?"
But I couldn't deny... he did look exceptionally handsome today. His sharp brows and frosty demeanor made him resemble a domineering CEO from a historical drama. Wait, what was I thinking?!
"Lord Commander has such refined taste," guard Zhao sneered as he pressed his sword against my neck. "In the dead of night, are you so eager to find a palace maid?"
I rolled my eyes inwardly: Seriously? That line is so cliché! Even our new intern wouldn't deliver it like that!
Xiao Yuan said nothing, just stared at me intently. His gaze lingered for a moment on the faint scar on my neck, and his eyes turned as cold as ice.
"System," I whispered, "you don't think he's really angry, do you?"
"Of course!" the system replied, exasperated. "His boyfriend saw you being bullied; naturally, he would be angry!"
"What boyfriend!" I nearly jumped up. "This is clearly a normal superior-subordinate relationship!"
"Is it?" the system said meaningfully. "Then explain why he came to rescue you in the middle of the night?"
I was at a loss for words. It did seem a bit out of line for workplace norms. But...
"Let her go." Xiao Yuan finally spoke, his voice as frigid as ice.
"That's not possible," guard Zhao tightened his grip. "His Highness the Crown Prince wants to see you; how about... we go together?"
"The Crown Prince?" I feigned innocence. "So this is the Crown Prince's idea? To have you abduct a palace maid in the middle of the night?"
guard Zhao's expression changed: "Stop talking nonsense!"
I continued, " master Zhao, if the Emperor finds out about this, how would you justify it?"
"Ding! The host is fishing for information again!" the system exclaimed excitedly. "You're using those workplace interrogation skills brilliantly!"
Sure enough, guard Zhao instinctively replied, "His Highness the Crown Prince has his own plans; you, a Little Palace Maid, should mind your own business!"
Tsk, that was easy to admit? I scoffed inwardly: if this were a company setting, he would have been called in by HR already! How could a leader's instructions be so openly acknowledged?
Just then, I noticed Xiao Yuan's expression change. The depths of his dark eyes grew colder still.
"System," I felt an inexplicable sense of panic, "why is Lord Commander looking at me like that?"
"What else could it be?" the system chuckled ambiguously. "He's going crazy with worry while you're still here fishing for answers!"
As I was speaking, guard Zhao suddenly let out a muffled grunt. I looked up to see Xiao Yuan darting forward like lightning, his sword aimed directly at guard Zhao's wrist!
"Watch out!" I shouted without thinking.
But Xiao Yuan seemed prepared; he swiftly pulled me behind him. His movements were quick and fierce, yet the way he held me was surprisingly gentle.
"Stay close," he whispered, his tone carrying a softness I had never heard from him before.
I was momentarily stunned. When had this usually icy man started speaking with such warmth?
But clearly, this was not the time to ponder that. Outside came a flurry of hurried footsteps; it seemed the Crown Prince's men had arrived!
Xiao Yuan's gaze darkened as he suddenly turned and stood in front of me, taking the blow from guard Zhao's sword head-on.
"Bang!" The clash of the sword energy sent sparks flying.
"Lord Commander!" I exclaimed in shock. Was he really going to take on so many by himself?
"Ding! The male lead has activated the protective mode for his wife!" the system shouted excitedly.
"I told you, it's not that kind of relationship!" I instinctively retorted, but as I watched him get hurt while shielding me, an indescribable feeling stirred within my heart.
Why was this man fighting so desperately?
